A gas explosion set off a major fire in a San Francisco Bay Area neighborhood on Thursday after obliterating at least one home, blowing out windows and shaking nearby houses. Six people were taken to hospitals for injuries, fire officials said.

California homeowners face the prospect of being unable to insure their home after the state's biggest insurer issued a grim warning.

As a California insurance agent I'm often at ground zero for customers having sticker shock over renewal premiums. We just renewed a high value homeowner in the California FAIR Plan with a Lloyd's of London wraparound for a combined $15,000 premium.

We recommended a separate fully surplus lines placement to that client, which would have cost $18,000 but even these very rich people balked at paying $3,000 extra despite the private insurance company we quoted actually having the money to pay claims unlike the underwater CA FAIR plan.

God help us with this insurance crisis. California and Florida probably face the worst of it now, but it's likely coming for the rest of the country too, and sooner rather than later.

Once again, just more hot air! Open up the free market and let carriers offer their charges. The FAIR Plan is bust and the only solution is an "open market place!" Get the politicians and consumer advocacy groups out of the way!

Next month, California Insurance Commissioner, Ricardo Lara will ask the public to weigh in on a plan to change some of the rules insurers must follow to do business in the state, including how they calculate the risk of wildfires and other disasters to set their rates.
