3 Things You Can’t Do as a Notary:

Learner’s Permit as ID?

If the permit says “Not for ID purposes” you can't use it as an ID.
If state law allows learner’s permits may be accepted as an ID, if it has have both a valid photo and signature. States that accept it: Illinois, Massachusetts, Texas, and Nevada (check with your state law to confirm). In California and Florida Learner's Permit is not accepted.
If there are no clear guidelines it is safest to have the signer bring another form of identification.

Top 3 Requests Notaries Must Always Refuse:

1: Skip the ID part
You must follow state laws and properly identify every signer. If they lack ID, some states allow alternatives like credible witnesses, but never skip ID.

2: Notarize a documents without physical presense of a signer.
The signer must be present. Notarizing without the signer is illegal and could lead to lawsuits or losing your commission.

3: Change the notarization date?
Back-dating or post-dating a notarization is illegal in all states and could result in serious penalties. Always use the actual date.

Stamping Notary certificate wording on a document instead of attaching a separate page with the required wording.

A notarial certificate doesn’t need to be a separate form attached to the document. A notary can use a stamp with the notarial certificate wording and apply it directly to the document. One advantage of using a stamp is that it eliminates the need for a description of the record, which is required for attached certificate forms.

If you choose to use stamps, ensure you have stamps for all types of notarial acts: acknowledgment, verification on oath or affirmation, signature witnessing, and copy certification — that you may perform. Additionally, make sure the stamps use 10-point type (font) to meet the requirements of your state recorder's office. Make sure to check with your state on other applicable requirements.
