Global markets were hit hard this week by a wave of high geopolitical risk. Operation Epic Fury led to military conflict between Iran, Israel, and the US. As the war escalated, energy markets abruptly repriced the possibility of a prolonged disruption to Middle Eastern supply. The effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz — the critical chokepoint for roughly 20% of global oil flows, sent crude prices sharply higher and reintroduced a sizeable geopolitical risk premium across assets. Oil rallied nearly 60% since the start of 2026, the largest weekly gain since 1983.

The shock rippled through financial markets. Equities sold off broadly as investors grappled with the inflationary implications of higher energy prices and the potential for further escalation. While the largest tech names cushioned the headline indices, market breadth deteriorated significantly with small-caps and equal-weighted benchmarks leading the downside.

Markets took another cautious turn this week as investors digested a mix of tariff news, economic data, and big-tech developments. A proposed 10% global tariff from Donald Trump added a fresh layer of uncertainty around trade and inflation, while new tools from Anthropic underscored how quickly the AI landscape continues to evolve. On the corporate front, NVIDIA earnings once again drew intense attention, serving as a bellwether for AI-driven growth expectations. Meanwhile, the latest PPI report pointed to easing inflation at the wholesale level, offering some reassurance that price pressures may be stabilizing. At the same time, improving consumer confidence signaled that households remain relatively optimistic, supported by a still-solid labor market and steady spending.

This week offered another timely reminder that markets don’t move in straight lines, especially when macro data and structural shifts collide.

U.S. equities closed broadly lower, with the S&P 500 down 1.40% and the Nasdaq off 2.11%, as investors digested a hotter-than-expected CPI print and a resilient jobs report. The Dow declined 1.23%, while small caps, as measured by the Russell 2000, dropped 0.94%. Globally, the MSCI ACWI slipped 0.23%.

Most notably, the equal-weight S&P 500 rose 0.30%, suggesting that the market weakness was concentrated in mega-cap names rather than the broader market. This divergence indicates that the mega-cap “AI winners” are finally facing gravity, while the average stock remains surprisingly resilient.

It has been another week for the history books. The Dow Jones Industrial Average powered through a historic milestone, surging 2.50% and closing above 50,000 for the first time ever. The index added over 1,200 points on Friday alone, or 2.47%.

Small Caps continues to be the story of 2026. The Russell 2000 is up 2.14%, and now it’s +7.6% year-to-date. Small-cap value stocks, which were up only +4.7% in 2025, are up +11% so far in 2026.

Beneath the surface, the market story was anything but calm. Software stocks continued their brutal sell-off, now down roughly 21% year-to-date as fears of AI disruption, slowing enterprise growth, and massive infrastructure spending weigh heavily on the sector. The tech-heavy Nasdaq reflected this sentiment, sliding 1.84% for the week.

Markets navigated a volatile week as investors digested the Fed’s decisions to keep rates unchanged, the new Fed chair nominee, and sharp reversals across multiple asset classes.

The Federal Reserve’s decision to keep rates unchanged offered short-term stability, but attention quickly turned to the nomination of Kevin Warsh as the next Fed Chair, reviving debate over the longer-term direction of monetary policy.

Precious metals captured the spotlight with a strong surge early in the week, only to suffer a steep one-day reversal that underscored how crowded positioning has become. Equity markets showed growing dispersion beneath the surface: while headline indices were relatively resilient, software stocks sold off sharply following earnings, and smaller-cap equities materially underperformed. In currency markets, the U.S. dollar weakened to 1.20 against the euro before retracing part of the move, reflecting ongoing tension between growth concerns and relative rate expectations.

Wall Street is heading into the three-day Martin Luther King weekend, grappling with a flurry of headlines out of Washington that sparked a significant divergence in performance across the board. While the major indices finished modestly lower, market participants spent the week navigating a volatile landscape shaped by escalating concerns over the Federal Reserve’s autonomy and a sudden spike in geopolitical friction involving Iran and Greenland, while still recovering from the impact of Venezuela's intervention.

While the S&P 500 (-0.37%) and Nasdaq (-0.66%) retreated under the weight of “Magnificent Seven” exhaustion, the broader market told a different story. While the wider market is up 1.5% for the first two weeks of 2026, the Mag 7 as a group has been lagging.

Small caps kept roaring, with the Russell 2000 climbing 2.06%, as the S&P 500 Equal Weight (+0.73%) outshined its market-cap-weighted sibling. In the alternative assets space, Gold (+1.64%) and Bitcoin (+5.81%) served as the primary hedges against institutional instability.

Happy New Year! As we step into 2026, we also welcome the Lunar Year of the Fire Horse (officially starts on February 17, 2026). In traditional astrology, the Fire Horse represents a period of intense energy, rapid movement, and bold, decisive action. If the first week of January is any indication, the world is mirroring that fiery spirit with startling precision.

Markets delivered a mixed performance this week as investors navigated new macro data reports and ongoing AI cost concerns. The S&P 500 edged up 0.11%, the Nasdaq gained 0.46%, and the equal-weight S&P 500 declined 0.27%, highlighting continued concentration in market leadership. Performance was weaker across more economically sensitive segments, with the Dow Jones down 0.72% and the Russell 2000 falling 0.47%. Global equities also retreated, as the MSCI ACWI declined 0.56%. Outside of equities, gold rose 0.85% amid lingering risk aversion, while Bitcoin fell 2.71%.

Russell 2000: -0.47%

Sentiment toward technology remained fragile, with elevated investor anxiety about the sustainability of Big Tech spending and the rising costs associated with AI infrastructure buildouts, contributing to broader market volatility.

Key economic data were in focus throughout the week, as investors digested the latest jobs report released on Tuesday and the CPI report on Thursday. While neither data point materially shifted the macro outlook, both reinforced a cautious tone across markets.
