Nobody likes to talk about it, but I will 🙋🏽‍♂️

When your spouse dies, their check goes away too...well, they do give you a $255 one-time check upon death, but that's it. 🙅🏽‍♂️

The good news is, in most cases if your spouse had a bigger SS check than you, you can trade in your check for theirs. Now you have more income.

But you won't get two SS checks anymore.

If you are dependent on your spouse's SS checks, you need to heavily consider buying a life insurance policy on them. In some cases, both spouses should have life insurance on each other.

Contrary to popular belief, you DON'T have to sign up for Medicare when you turn 65 IF you or your spouse are still working AND you have health insurance through that active employment. 👷💼👩‍💻✅

If you don't have coverage after your 65th birthday or if you have some other non-creditable coverage (COBRA and VA are NOT creditable) then you do run the risk of a penalty. 💸

Everyone's situation is different and there are always nuances to consider.

This is why Medicare Supplement (aka Medigap plans) have different pricing.

The older you get, the more likely you are (statistically speaking) to have higher medical claims. Pricing has to adjust to accommodate this.

Got a HSA from work?

You can use it during retirement to pay for:
- Medicare Part B monthly premium ($202.90 for most)
- Medicare Part B deductible ($283 this year)
- Dental care
- Vision care
- and other things

But if you're making contributions to it after your 65th birthday, you MIGHT be penalized by the IRS.
