The Judicial Council of California decided in response to COVID-19 to set bail at $0 for most misdemeanor and lower-level felony offenders. The emergency order began 5 p.m. TODAY until 90 days after the lifting of statewide shelter-in-place order. Thousands of California inmates were released this evening.

In a time when we are telling people to shelter in place, we are also being ordered to release people back into the streets. On one hand some areas in California are threatening law-abiding citizens with citations or worse if they leave their homes, while telling people committing legitimate crimes that there are effectively no consequences for their actions.

This is a trying time for all and a time of a lot of uncertainty for our communities. What kind of message does this send that we are restricting the civil liberties for some, while loosening restrictions for others?

We are punishing those who are trying to go by the continuously evolving rule of law, while literally giving get of jail free cards for those who are intentionally breaking the law.

Does this emergency order make sense to YOU? Let us know!

In many counties across the nation they have been limiting the bail schedule, meaning instead of holding people for crimes, they are citing and releasing. Due to Covid, various states have been releasing people charged with crimes early, but without consequences of release you’ll get a lot of this.

In San Diego they are only giving jail time for violent felonies, but battery isn’t one of them, which is baffling enough.

James Little, 41 — on parole for a 1995 murder and recently freed on charges of assaulting his girlfriend over fears he might contract coronavirus in jail — was put back behind bars Tuesday after he tried to heist a bank near Union Square, said cops.

Otay detention center will release 3,500 inmates.

As of Monday, the CDCR says 22 employees and four inmates have tested positive for COVID-19.

A San Diego prison worker has tested positive for coronavirus, as California prepares to release 3,500 non-violent offenders.

With such close proximity this could be very problematic.

The Los Angeles County sheriff has reduced the jail population by more than 600 people and is asking officers to cite and release offenders when possible to protect inmates from the coronavirus.

The inmate population has been decreased by more than 600, in part through early release of those with less than 30 days left on their sentences.
