With mortgage rates hitting their highest levels in decades, you might wonder why homeowners are still refinancing—and where it’s happening the most. The data might surprise you!
According to recent data, South Dakota, Montana, and Nebraska led the nation in refinancing activity during the first quarter of 2024. In South Dakota alone, half of all mortgage applications were for refinancing, while Nebraska and Montana followed closely behind with 44.5% and 42%, respectively.
So, why the spike? Early in 2024, mortgage rates that had soared to around 8% in late 2023 began to decline, settling in the mid-6% range. This drop created an opportunity for homeowners to adjust their loan terms, despite the overall rate environment remaining challenging.
The mortgage market is incredibly sensitive to even slight changes in rates, and this trend highlights just how much of an impact they can have on homeowners' decisions.
