With home prices where they are today, the traditional “starter home” is getting harder to find. But it’s not dead.
A starter home was never supposed to be your perfect home. Its main job is to help you get into the market and start building equity.
And that should guide almost every decision you make.
Equity is usually built in two ways: through time and appreciation, or by adding value yourself.
That could mean buying a home that needs cosmetic work, or buying in a neighborhood that still has room to grow. The ideal combination is often a home that needs some work in a solid area.
You benefit from the long-term strength of the neighborhood, while your improvements can accelerate the equity you build.
So your first home may not check every box.
But if it gives you a path to build value, it may still be the right starter home.
