To put it simply, over the last 48 hours, rates have experienced a more substantial decline than nearly any other period in our recorded history. A comparable event occurred in November 2022, with just one other instance in March 2020, though this is considered an anomaly due to the extraordinary market conditions at the beginning of the pandemic.

Mortgage Rates loved this news!
The Fed kept rates on hold for the 3rd-straight meeting. No surprise there. But its "dot plot" of Fed member forecasts for where policy rates will be in a year showed that 15 out of 19 members expect cuts of between 50 and 100 bps over the course of 2024.

Buyer activity recovered somewhat in December, as the recent 1% fall in mortgage rates coaxed some buyers back from the sidelines. Home prices continued to hold up better than transaction volumes. But with lower rates, slightly improved inventory, and spring around the corner, activity levels may have already bottomed.

BLS Jobs Report (November 2023)
Boosted by the return of striking workers, job growth was stronger than expected in November, with the BLS reporting 199K new jobs versus the forecasted 180K. There were no revisions to October, but September was revised down by 35k jobs. The unemployment rate unexpectedly fell 0.2% from October to 3.7%. Despite this beat, we expect the Fed to stay on hold next week.
