October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, so let's talk about one of the most costly scams in real estate: wire fraud. π
Here's how it usually works. Right before closing, a buyer gets an email that looks like it's from their title company, agent, or lender. The message says the wiring instructions have changed and the money needs to go out today.
How to protect yourself:
π Call to confirm before you send anything. Use a phone number you already know is real, not one listed in the email.
π© Treat any change to wiring instructions as a red flag, especially at the last minute.
βΈοΈ Slow down. A real closing never requires you to panic.
Once a wire is sent, it can be very hard to get back. When in doubt, pick up the phone. And if anything about your closing ever feels off, call me first.
