๐ฐ What is IRMAA โ and could it affect what you pay for Medicare?
IRMAA stands for Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount.
Simply put, IRMAA is an additional amount you may have to pay for Medicare Part B and Part D if your income is above certain limits.
For 2026, Social Security generally determines whether you owe IRMAA using the income reported on your 2024 federal tax return โ so Medicare is essentially looking back two years.
Your income for IRMAA purposes is based on your Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI). As your income crosses certain thresholds, your Medicare Part B premium and Part D IRMAA surcharge can increase.
โ ๏ธ Hereโs something many people donโt realize:
Your income two years ago may not reflect your income today.
If your income has decreased because of certain qualifying life-changing events, such as retirement, loss of work, marriage, divorce, death of a spouse, or loss of certain income-producing property, you may be able to ask Social Security to reconsider your IRMAA determination.
That can make a BIG difference in what you pay for Medicare.
If you received an IRMAA notice, are planning for retirement, or simply want to understand how your income could affect your Medicare costs, Iโm happy to help you understand the Medicare side of the equation.
