If I see one more celebrity commercial promising "free money" to Seniors, I might lose my mind.
You know the ones I am talking about. They promise $3,000 for groceries, paid utility bills, and a "Flex Card" that seems to cover everything under the sun. It sounds like a dream, right?
Here is the truth: Those benefits are real for some… but certainly not all...
When those commercials say "everyone is eligible," they are technically talking about the phone call, not the benefit. They want you to call so they can get your phone number and any other information about you they can.
Here is what they aren't telling you about who is really able to get those "extra" benefits:
Must be Dual Eligible: For many, in order to be eligible, you must be “dual eligible,” meaning you must qualify for Medicare AND Medicaid to see any allowance for grocery and utility expenses, which are tied to "Special Needs Plans."
The Zip Code Lottery: Just because a celebrity says it on TV doesn't mean that specific plan is available in our county. Benefits vary wildly by zip code.
The Trade-Off: Sometimes, getting that "Flex Card" means you are giving up a lower maximum out-of-pocket limit or a broader doctor network. There is no such thing as a free lunch in insurance.
The Network Trap: A card that pays for your groceries doesn't matter much if your favorite specialist doesn't take the plan it is attached to.
My job is to help you see past the shiny plastic card and look at the actual math. We look at your doctors, your prescriptions, and your budget first. If there is a legitimate extra benefit you qualify for, I will be the first one to find it for you.
Don't make a lifelong healthcare decision based on a 30-second celebrity pitch.
