The beneficiary you picked years ago might not be the person you'd pick today.

It's Estate Planning Awareness Week, and this might be the easiest piece of the whole thing. A simple check usually takes about five minutes.

Check your current policy information or call the insurer directly, and confirm:

The person listed is the person you'd pick today.
What's on file with the insurer matches what you remember putting down.
Whether there's a backup beneficiary listed, too.

Life moves. Marriages, losses, new grandbabies, a move across the country. The insurer generally pays based on the beneficiary designation on file, not on what you meant to change.

If you'd like a second set of eyes, I'm glad to walk through it with you once a year. It doesn't matter who sold you the policy.

When did you last check the beneficiary on your policy?

There are a few things I won't recommend, even if you ask me to.

Replacing coverage you already have before we know the new policy is approved, in force, and actually makes sense. A gap in coverage can be hard to undo.

A premium that only works if nothing in your budget ever changes. If it'll be a stretch every month, we'll look at a smaller amount.

Leaving out information the application asks for. Inaccurate answers can affect coverage and future claims, and that's the worst time for a surprise.

A policy I can't explain to you in plain English. I'm not comfortable recommending it until you understand what you're buying.

I'm an independent broker, so I'm not tied to one company's product. That's what lets me say no to the stuff that doesn't fit.

What's the worst insurance advice you've ever been given?

Your will can say who gets the house. It doesn't create cash for the funeral.

It's National Estate Planning Awareness Week, so here's a difference I end up explaining a lot.

Money controlled by an estate may not be available right away, especially when probate is involved. How long that takes depends on your state, what's in the estate, and how things are set up. Meanwhile, the funeral bill usually shows up much sooner.

Life insurance works differently. When a living beneficiary is properly named and the claim is approved, the money is generally paid straight to that beneficiary instead of waiting on probate. That's one reason a will and a small policy solve two different planning problems.

I'm not an attorney, and estate rules vary by state. For your will, talk with an estate planning attorney. For the funeral-money piece, that's where I can help.

Where are you right now: a will, a policy, both, or neither yet?

Already have a life insurance quote in front of you? Good. Don't throw it away.

Bring it to me and I'll give you a second look. Sometimes the first quote is a solid fit. Sometimes another carrier or policy design may fit your situation or budget better.

I'm an independent broker, so I can compare options across many carriers instead of being locked to one company's book. That doesn't make the first agent wrong. It just means you deserve a second set of eyes before you sign.

If you've got a quote sitting on the kitchen counter, let's talk through it.

When you look at an insurance quote, what loses you first: the price, the terminology, or the fine print?

Before you buy from anyone, including me, ask these three questions.

How many companies can you shop for me? An independent broker can usually compare options across a lot of carriers. A captive agent typically represents one insurer or a limited product lineup. Neither is automatically wrong. You just deserve to know which one you're talking to.

Is the premium level, and is the death benefit level or graded? Those are two different things. Ask whether your premium can change, and separately ask whether the full death benefit is available from day one. The price isn't the whole story.

What happens if I miss a payment? You want a clear answer on grace periods and how to get back on track before you sign anything.

I work as an independent broker across 30+ carriers, so I'm happy when people ask me the hard questions too.

Which of those three would you ask first?

Remember when the insurance man came to the house?

He'd knock, sit down in the living room, open his collection book, and somehow know everybody's name, including the dog's.

What people remember wasn't the paperwork. It was knowing who they were dealing with.

The house call changed, but I don't think that part should. I still work with people personally. We talk by phone, I learn what you're trying to take care of, and I compare options across 30+ carriers instead of handing you one company's answer.

Did the insurance man ever come to your house growing up? Better question: do you remember his name?

When I shop your coverage across 30+ carriers, I'm not just hunting for the cheapest number on the screen.

I look at four things:

Your health. Some carriers are easier on certain conditions or medications than others.
Your age. Rates and options shift as birthdays go by, and not every carrier treats them the same.
Your coverage goal. Paying for a funeral, clearing a few bills, or leaving something behind can point to different amounts.
Your budget. Coverage only helps if the premium is something you can comfortably keep paying.

The cheapest quote isn't always the best fit. The best fit is the one that lines up all four.

If you're shopping for yourself or a parent, which matters most right now: health, age, coverage amount, or budget?

Before we talk price, there's one question we ask first: what are you trying to solve?

Maybe it's making sure the funeral's paid for. Maybe it's making sure the kids aren't splitting a bill. Maybe it's leaving something for the grandkids.

Each of those can point to a different amount and a different kind of policy. Once we know the why, comparing options across 30+ carriers has a purpose.

If you've been thinking about coverage for yourself or a parent, what's the one thing you'd want it to take care of?

These two can look the same on a flyer. They don't pay the same in the first couple of years.

Level benefit: if you qualify, the full amount is in place once your coverage starts.

Graded benefit: natural-cause benefits are limited early on, often for the first two years. Depending on the policy, that may mean a partial benefit or your premiums back plus interest. After that, the full benefit applies. Accidental death is often covered in full from the start, but check your policy.

Graded coverage has a real place, especially if you've had some recent health issues. Just make sure graded was the right fit, not simply the only option one company showed you.

Not sure which one you have? Look for the word "graded" or "modified" on your policy.

Mom shouldn't have to figure this out alone.

Between the mailers, the TV ads, and the phone calls, a lot of parents see one company's option and assume that's the only one. It usually isn't. Depending on her age, health, and goals, another carrier may be a better fit.

That's what an independent broker is for. At RyCo Life Solutions, we compare options from 30+ carriers and explain them in plain English, for her and for you. No pressure. No call-center runaround. Licensed in 47 states plus D.C.

If you're the adult kid helping a parent sort this out, we're glad to walk you both through it. Call 314-876-0334.
