Federal regulations require motor carriers to maintain specific minimum insurance coverage levels depending on their cargo type. These requirements, set out by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), apply to carriers operating in interstate commerce across all states. They exist to protect the public, cover damages in accidents, and promote safe practices across the industry.
• Non-Hazardous Materials: Minimum coverage is $750,000 per incident which has remained unchanged since 1980.
• Oil & Common Hazardous Materials: When hauling oil or similar materials, the minimum increases to $1,000,000.
• Extremely Hazardous Materials: Gasoline, explosives, and radioactive goods require a minimum of $5,000,000 reflecting their elevated risk profile.
These coverage requirements exist for a reason and they are not negotiable.
