A big financial surprise rarely arrives at a convenient time. How would you handle an emergency?

A 2025 Federal Reserve survey asked adults how they’d handle a $400 emergency expense. In response, 63 percent said they’d cover it using cash or its equivalent. That share hasn’t changed since 2024.

A financial cushion doesn’t have to be large to matter; it just has to be large enough to handle the emergency in question. Even a modest cushion can change how a surprise feels: less like a crisis, more like an inconvenience.

What would be the right amount for your household? Let’s talk about it at our next visit.

Treasury yields pulled back from their recent highs after a strong auction eased some concerns about demand for government debt. The 10-year Treasury yield climbed as high as 5.35%, its highest level since 2002, before easing following the Treasury's sale of $39 billion in 10-year notes.

Demand at the auction was stronger than average, particularly from indirect bidders such as global central banks, which accounted for 80.3% of the sale, compared with a 10-auction average of 72.4%.

The broader backdrop is still one of elevated yields, with investors weighing persistent inflation, rising energy prices, and expectations that the Federal Reserve may raise rates again before year-end. For now, the auction offered a little reassurance that demand for longer-term Treasurys remains strong even as yields sit near multidecade highs.

U.S. Treasury yields came off their highs after a solid sale of 10-year notes.

🌠 October is bringing a little celestial entertainment! The annual Draconid meteor shower is expected to peak on the night of October 8–9, with excellent viewing conditions thanks to an almost moonless sky.

Unlike many meteor showers that are best viewed in the early morning hours, the Draconids are an evening event. This year's peak is expected around 9 PM EDT on October 8, so there's no need to stay up until dawn. 🌌

Here's how to make the most of it:
🔭 Find a dark spot. Head somewhere away from city lights with a clear view of the sky.
✨ Give your eyes time to adjust. Allow about 30 minutes to get used to the darkness.
🌙 Leave the equipment at home. You won't need a telescope or binoculars. Just look up and take in as much of the sky as possible.

The Draconids typically produce around five meteors per hour under ideal conditions, although they've surprised skywatchers with spectacular displays in the past.

The shower runs from October 6–10, so you may have several opportunities to catch a shooting star, weather permitting.

Will you be watching? 🌠

Good news! The Draconid meteor shower peaks under almost moonless skies on Oct. 8-9.
