We just heard from one of our carriers....
DO NOT SIGN a contract with a tree trimmer, unless you have an estimate in hand. Insurance companies will pay reasonable amount to cut a tree down from a covered structure. There's generally some coverage for debris removal. However, if you just have a tree in your yard, and it's not affecting any structure on your property, the insurance company will have limited coverage for the removal of the tree.
The carrier stated there will soon be tree trimming companies from other states, who will bait you into a contract, and do overpriced and unnecessary services, that are not going to be covered on your insurance policy. The example he gave me was a $30,000 bill that the tree trimming company put a lien on the homeowner's house, after overcharging for reasonable services.
If you need to take immediate steps to mitigate further damage before an adjuster arrives, keep receipts, take pictures, hire local.
