A significant Arctic cold blast is forecast to move into the Northeast late this week, bringing dangerously low temperatures and wind chills, with prolonged subfreezing conditions expected throughout the weekend and into next week.

Local forecasts show temperatures dropping well below normal, with wind chills that could pose frostbite and hypothermia risks if precautions aren’t taken. In addition to the cold, a winter storm system could develop, bringing snow and ice that can increase risks for property damage and related claims.

We are advising our clients to take proactive measures to reduce risk and protect coverage eligibility. Failure to take reasonable precautions (i.e., leaving a home or business unheated during extreme cold) may limit or void coverage. It’s important to maintain consistent indoor temperatures, insulate vulnerable pipes in unheated spaces or against exterior walls, drain and disconnect outdoor hoses, and allow faucets to drip slightly during extreme cold. Clearing gutters and downspouts before snow and ice accumulation can help prevent ice dams and roof damage. If pipes freeze, clients should keep faucets open, apply gentle heat, and never use open flames.

Other winter weather tips:
• dress in multiple layers;
• stay hydrated;
• keep emergency supplies in your vehicle (e.g., food, water, radio, medications, blankets)
• minimize outdoor activities;
• insulate houses by blocking drafts in doorways; and
• check on elderly neighbors and family members.
