If you've noticed green peaks where there should be white this winter, you're not imagining it. Oregon's snowpack has just reached its lowest level since records began in the 1980s — the Cascades are below 50% of normal, and Mt. Hood is at around 19%.

Why does that matter here in Salem? That snowpack is our water tower. It feeds our rivers, supports Willamette Valley farms, and keeps wildfire risk in check. Without it, we're looking at a tough summer.

The silver lining — snowpack typically peaks in late March, so there's still time for Mother Nature to make a comeback. Fingers crossed.
