Low water levels are creating a new challenge for river cruise travelers, but the biggest risk may be what their travel insurance doesn’t cover.

This summer’s extreme heat has contributed to low water levels on some of Europe’s most traveled rivers, forcing cruise lines to alter or cancel itineraries.

Our latest analysis found that most travel insurance plans, including cruise-specific plans, don’t cover disruptions caused by low or high water levels. Of the six cruise-specific plans available on Squaremouth, only two currently cover water-level disruptions: IMG Choice Cruise and Tin Leg Cruise.

The bigger takeaway: as climate-related disruptions become more common, travelers need to look beyond whether a policy is labeled “cruise insurance” and understand exactly what it covers.

For river cruisers, checking the fine print before buying could make a significant difference.

In this role, he supports claims for Tin Leg, Squaremouth’s in-house travel insurance brand, handling a high volume of detailed tasks each day and turning complex documents into clear, actionable information for customers.

His work focuses on explaining exactly what a policy covers, ensuring travelers understand their protection when it matters most. “I help customers feel more secure by clearly explaining what their policy states. It takes the guesswork out of a stressful situation.”

Before joining Squaremouth, he worked as a medication auditor and pharmacy liaison, bringing a sharp eye for detail and problem-solving. “Claims are like a puzzle, matching policy language with the right information. I enjoy figuring out how the pieces fit together.”

That mindset, combined with a personal connection to travel, shapes his approach. “I’m naturally anxious when I travel, so I understand how important peace of mind is. Travel insurance helps ease those worries.”

For him, the most meaningful moments come from making a real difference. “Approving an honest claim is impactful; you know you’ve helped protect someone’s trip.”

David says Portugal is one of his favorite destinations, with Alaska next on his list.
