Elizabeth Ann Brooks, Personal Financial Representative, AFS, LLC Financial services I was raised in Atlanta but have spent the early years of my marriage in Saint Petersburg which is where my children were born.

My husband and I have now settled in the area again and I've come to know many local families and developed many relationships. This local connection has helped me better understand the needs of Allstate customers, especially when it comes to their financial needs. From life insurance, to retirement accounts to college savings I'm available to help customers with a variety of financial services. One of the things I like best about my association with Allstate is the variety of services and solutions I can offer customers. September is Life Insurance Awareness Month. I have had people in my personal life have things happen over the last year that could render them uninsurable. These are people that have a need for life insurance and I had not asked them previously if they had life insurance.

Do you have life insurance? Don’t assume just because you are nearing retirement that you have outlived your need for it. Some couples need life insurance to replace social security or pension income in the event they die relatively early in retirement.

Still in your earnings years and have life insurance through your employer? Please do not depend upon that as your sole coverage.

Talk to your financial professional to help you determine how much coverage you should have. And if you don’t have a financial professional reach out to me or to a life insurance agent you know you can trust. Don’t wait.

Has your financial professional projected your cash flow in retirement?
There is so much information out there, but generalizations are not sufficient. It is important to visualize your retirement with your data set. Start with your sources of retirement income, an itemized list of expenses, and your investable assets. Of course you must make some assumptions with regard to life span and rates of return among others, but make sure your advisor is showing you what your cash flow could look like in retirement. I started working with a young man and his wife a couple of decades ago. They had a great deal of debt and three children to put through college. He drew funds from his IRA early several times, paying taxes and penalties. He couldn’t imagine achieving his financial goals. Fast forward to today. He and his wife are debt free, their children are all college graduates, and their retirement goals are well in sight now. They have put in the work. I am so proud of them.

Have you planned for your future? What does your future hold? The fact is you don’t really know and you should plan for those unknowns. My husband and I are going through one of those unknowns right now. A few years ago he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. It is a cruel, progressive disease that progresses differently for everyone. In his case it has been aggressive and unrelenting. I am thankful that many years ago we purchased long term care insurance and I am not certain what we would do financially without it today. If you haven’t considered long term care insurance and you consider yourself to be in the financial middle class please take the time to consider it. If you don’t purchase it make sure you make the conscious decision to self insure. Let me know if I can help.
