If you ever tried to calculate the hourly rate for a stay-at-home parent here in Saint Peters, you’d realize they probably deserve a corner office and a company car. Between being a chef, a laundry wizard, a professional negotiator (usually over bedtime), and a 24/7 taxi service, the "salary" would be through the roof.

A lot of folks think life insurance is only for the "primary earner." But honestly, if the person running the household isn't around, who's going to handle all those jobs? Replacing that level of help costs real money. I wanted to mention something that comes up a lot when folks buy a house around here. You probably got those letters from the bank about "Mortgage Protection." Sounds helpful, right?

But here’s the deal: with the bank’s version, if something happens, they're the ones who get paid. Your family doesn't see a dime: the bank just clears the debt.

I was chatting with a neighbor at the ball game the other day and they asked how much life insurance is actually "enough." It’s a question I get all the time.

A simple rule of thumb I like is the 10x plus $100k rule. Basically, aim for 10 times your annual salary, then add $100k for each kid’s college or any big debts you've got hanging around. It sounds like a lot of math, but it’s just a quick way to make sure your family can keep the house and the kids can still head off to Mizzou if you’re not there.

I was talking to a guy at the park yesterday. He’s got a young family and knows he needs life insurance, but he’s waiting for the "right time."

Here’s the thing about waiting: there’s a bit of a "waiting tax" on life insurance. Every year we get a little older, the price goes up just because we're another year down the road. It’s usually much cheaper to grab a policy now than it is next spring. Plus, you don't have to worry about it anymore once it's done.

You ever notice how as soon as your birthday rolls around, everything seems to get a little bit more expensive? In the insurance world, we sometimes call it the "Birthday Tax."

Basically, the longer you wait to lock in a life insurance rate, the more it's gonna cost ya. I was talking to a neighbor at the ball game the other day about how just waiting even a few months can really add up over the life of a policy. It’s one of those things where "later" usually means "more expensive."
