This is why you never have your grill near your home!

Here are six common sensical grilling tips for Memorial Day Weekend.

1. For propane grills, check the gas tank for leaks before use in the months ahead.

2. Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.

3. Place the grill well away from the home, deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it.

4. Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grilling area.

5.If you use starter fluid when charcoal grilling, only use charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire. When you have or are finished grilling, let the coals cool completely before disposing in a metal container.

6. Never leave your grill unattended when in use.

Prevent water pipes and meters from freezing.
Frozen pipes are caused by the fresh air intake on the furnace blowing directly at their water meter.

The fresh air intake is often located right next to the water meter in these homes. If you notice the fresh air intake is located near your water meter, make sure that it isn't blowing too close. If you notice that it is blowing too close, do not stuff anything inside the intake. Instead, put the end of the hose in a large bucket or curve it up and away from the water meter or any pipes. If you use a bucket, make sure that it's large enough to give the vent pipe room to "breathe."

In addition, any pipes that are located against an outside wall, including many kitchen sinks, should have adequate ventilation to prevent freezing. If you notice a kitchen cabinet adjacent to the sink is cold, you may have a frozen pipe. Open the cupboard door to let warm air in.
