I ran some numbers the other day.
The US has 1,636,144 active 501(c)3 nonprofits.
Of these, roughly 1M file something other than the 990-N postcard, which means they have income over $50,000 a year and presumably some complexity.
The US also has 10,124 accounting / bookkeeping firms that say they are focused on ; the image below breaks them out by employee count. This includes big nonprofit-specific firms like Jitasa and Your Part-Time Controller, LLC as well as larger firms like CLA (CliftonLarsonAllen) and BDO USA that have large nonprofit segments.
Even wildly rounded, and ignoring that a bunch probably do audit and tax but no bookkeeping, 1M divided by 10,125 equals almost 100 clients per firm. Even the little firms.
My takeaway, nonprofit accounting friends, is that THERE IS PLENTY OF WORK.
Our biggest competitor is ignorance.
We can all afford to be generous.
