Shared Capital Cooperative

Shared Capital Cooperative Shared Capital Cooperative is a national CDFI loan fund that connects co-ops and capital to build economic democracy nation-wide.

We provide financing for the expansion and startup of co-ops with capital invested by the co-op sector and its allies. Shared Capital Cooperative is a national loan fund and federally certified Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) that provides financing to cooperative businesses and housing throughout the United States. Shared Capital’s mission is to foster economic democracy by inv

esting in cooperative enterprises, with a focus on providing financing to co-ops to create wealth in low-income and economically disadvantaged communities. Shared Capital is a cooperative association, democratically owned and governed by its members, more than 175 cooperatives in over 30 states. By borrowing from and investing in the fund, members directly engage in our work, connecting cooperatives and capital and supporting shared economic prosperity and ownership. Shared Capital Cooperative also raises investments from social investors who support the cooperative economy and are aligned with our mission. Headquartered in Minneapolis, Shared Capital Cooperative is managed by a small, professional staff and governed by a board of directors that is nominated and elected by our members. Since its founding in 1978, Shared Capital, formerly known as Northcountry Cooperative Development Fund, has made nearly 800 loans totaling over $40 million to cooperatives in the United States. We are thrilled to announce that we will enter this film contest! We worked with Bond Studio to highlight three of our members showing a broad array of what co-ops can do. From Happy Earth Cleaning Cooperative, an ecologically minded worker co-op, to Seward Community Co-op, a food co-op with multiple locations, to Mercado Central, a cooperative market providing access to commercial spaces, we can't wait to share these stories. See you in DC!

Missed the July 31 deadline? Good news—we’re extending the submission window for NCBA CLUSA’s 2nd annual IMPACT Film Fest, giving cooperators an extra week to share the stories that inspire, education and strengthen our movement.

This is your opportunity to show how your co-op is transforming your community. If you’ve been meaning to submit but haven’t found the time, now is your chance.

Why invest in cooperation? Your impact will serve communities 👇
Seward Community Co-op was asked by community members in Bryant-Central to open a second store in an underserved neighborhood labelled by the USDA as a food desert. This store is emblematic of the service of co-ops when used by communities and supported by cooperative capital, not banks.

Invest in cooperation, starting at just $500, you can build a stronger cooperative economy.

Alex of Seward Community Co-op talked about how we're different as a lender and we supported this second store. Alex is a long-time former board member and part of our loan committee of Shared Capital, supporting hundreds of loan apps.

Thanks to Alex and everyone at Seward for your years of membership and collaboration. Thanks Bond Studio for your work in creating these great pieces.

We love education in co-ops and we love Association of Cooperative Educators. ACE has been holding it down on co-op education, training, and information for decades and are a great resource. Great to see so many co-op educators and practitioners there at the conference.

We were proud sponsors this year and sent half of our team to the conference. Thanks to ACE and to everyone we saw at the conference. International Cooperative Alliance
