Life insurance is a key piece of protection for LGBTQ adults.

Source: 2024 Insurance Barometer Study, Life Happens and LIMRA. Our research shows that the LGBTQ+ community is underinsured—more than the general population. Our goal as a nonprofit is to educate year-round and help everyone close this coverage gap! Check out more info at lifehappens.org/barometer2024.

This is a sad statistic, but there are a few ways to help prevent this - or to mitigate the risk at the very least:

1. Get health coverage. The Affordable Care Act makes it possible to purchase coverage if you lose employer sponsored coverage. In addition to federal subsidies to lower the cost, many states, including Minnesota, offer programs that lower the cost of coverage dramatically.

2. Invest in life insurance with “living benefits” that can be used to pay your expenses if you develop a serious illness. Depending on the severity of the illness and the carrier, you can access up to 90% of the cash value of your death benefit.

3. Consider disability insurance, either as a standalone policy or a rider on your life insurance policy. This will protect your income when you need it most and coverage is VERY affordable.
