Michigan recently passed a law prohibiting insurance companies from increasing premiums based on how much they believe a customer is willing to pay—or how unlikely that customer is to leave.

That doesn’t mean every increase is improper. Rates may still change because of repair costs, claims trends, inflation, your vehicle or property, coverage selections and other approved rating factors.

The important takeaway? Your insurance premium should be based on legitimate risk and expense—not simply because a company thinks you’ll tolerate a higher price.
