Good Afternoon! Let's be weather aware this afternoon. Kansas City is in the risk for severe weather with large hail and damaging winds the main risk. Conditions are favorable for the thunderstorms to become strong enough to produce a tornado threat. The Storm Prediction Center has placed KC, the yellow shade, in a 10% risk of a tornado within 25 miles of where you live. I like to look at it as if there is a 90% chance there isn't a tornado within 25 miles of where you live to show you that this chance is still quite low. At the same time, today may be our highest probability of having a tornado in 2025. There is a storm system approaching and one good thing that may come out of this is the fact we need some rain right now. The farmers could use a good drink of water on their planted crops. 1" to 2" of rain seems likely by morning with a few spots getting 3" or more, while others may end up with just 1/2".

A significant tornado outbreak along the I-35 corridor and points east is likely this afternoon, evening and tonight! All the ingredients are coming together to produce numerous tornadoes in which several could be EF3 - EF5 strength. This is not your 'normal' tornado day across the Southern Plains - this has the potential to be a day that only happens once every several years or decade. Please make sure you're weather aware and have a way to receive timely, accurate weather warnings and warnings you can hear if you're asleep. It would be wise to touch up on your severe weather, sheltering plan and make sure it accounts for your pets

Severe Thunderstorms are breaking out over northern Iowa and Minnesota with Tornado Warnings now being issued. On this satellite picture from Weatertap.com we can see a cumulus field developing. We will be monitoring this closely for potential thunderstorm development around 6 PM. Severe Weather is possible in KC this evening, and most likely north of KC.

TORNADO RISK INCREASING!!!!

The "hatched" area is the zone to watch for strong, and/or long-tracked tornadoes.

Window is as early as 4pm, but I am really focused on 7-11pm window. Tornado risk may continue into the overnight hours.

Have a plan in place. It is shaping up to be an active weather evening, especially for you folks in central Oklahoma.

A dangerous severe thunderstorm outbreak is expected this afternoon into tonight across parts of central and eastern Kansas into much of Oklahoma. Multiple strong, long-track tornadoes, very large hail (2-4 inch diameter), and damaging gusts to 80 mph are all possible. Thunderstorms are expected to develop by mid-afternoon across west-central KS and western OK. This activity will shift east into the nighttime hours.

Key an eye on the weather today via www.weather.gov and www.spc.noaa.gov. Have multiple ways to receive watch and warning information, such a NOAA Weather Radio, local TV media, cell phone alerts, etc. If a warning is issued for your area, seek shelter immediately.
