I grew up on a dirt road in a house built in the middle of nowhere. The house was built by my father, Eric Payton. Eric met my mom when I was about 3.5 years old. By that last sentence, I’m sure you picked up that Eric is not my blood father. But in all seriousness, Eric is my father. Building a house for a single mom and her child is one thing, but stepping up to raise a son is another.
Eric taught me a lot growing up, not just the basics of life. The two most important things I took away from him were: discipline and work ethic.
As you can see in some of the photos, I used to do 4-H. I wasn’t a big fan of animals, their droppings, and dirty pens. Regardless, every single day, Eric had me go out to those pens with my coloring books until the animals became friendly and approached me. What he taught me here was discipline and patience.
I remember learning how to ride my first bike. He had me do laps around the yard with the training wheels on until I could pedal on my own. It wasn’t until then that the training wheels came off.
I was scared to death to ride on the back of his motorcycle, and the new dirt bike my grandfather bought for me. Eric pushed me to be comfortable with both. He taught me the freedom of the road and the trails up north. Now, I get to enjoy those things.
Not only did he step up to fill a role that I needed in my life, but he also taught me things that were going to be necessary to become a successful agent.
I’m proud to call Eric my father, and I’m proud to bring all the lessons that he taught me into my practice at Farm Bureau Insurance.
Happy Father’s Day. And shoutout to all the fathers; whether you’re blood-related or not, you matter to that child and their future.
