🎓 Teacher Spotlight: Celebrating A Legacy
Congratulations Mrs. Walk on retiring after a wonderful 35 years of teaching! Leigh Ann has taught Math and a little English over the years. What an amazing career. Thank you for your dedication and loyalty to the St. Elmo community. Enjoy retirement. Keep reading to learn more about this great teacher!
1.Tell us a little about yourself and your journey in education:
(What led you to teaching, where you started, or what has kept you inspired over the years?)
I decided to teach because when I started college as a business major, I hated it. I had always been pretty good at explaining things to my classmates, so I decided to go into teaching. I started my career here at St Elmo 35 years ago on the junior high end of the building. My intention was to only teach junior high, but around 16 years ago, I was asked to move to the high school end, and I have enjoyed it very much.
2.What has been the most rewarding part of your teaching career?
(A favorite memory, moment, or experience with students or colleagues)
One of the most rewarding aspects of teaching in the same community for so long is the number of students I have had the opportunity to teach that I still come into contact with today. A lot of former student’s children have been or are currently in my classes. I also have contact with many of my former students on social media. I enjoy seeing what they are doing now, and I also enjoy seeing pictures of their families. I am so proud of how most of them have turned out.
3.A favorite quote, motto, or phrase you’ve lived by—inside or outside the classroom:
Psalm 46:10 “Be still and know that I am God.” I find much comfort in this scripture.
Another quote I like is “Comparison is the thief of joy,” contributed to Theodore Roosevelt.
4.Best advice you’ve learned or would like to pass on to students or fellow educators:
Something that has always worked well for me is treating the students with respect even if they don’t treat me the same way. It becomes more difficult for them to be disrespectful when you are always kind and respectful to them.
5.What are you most looking forward to in retirement?
(Travel, hobbies, time with family, new adventures, or simply relaxing!)
I plan to spend a lot more time with my grandchildren in either babysitting or attending their activities. I will also be back subbing at the jr/sr high school.
6.A fun or little-known fact about you:
Other jobs I have had:
Worked at Dairy Queen
Worked in a magazine factory
Telephone operator
Resident assistant in a dorm
Bank teller
Desk clerk and breakfast hostess at a hotel
