🎓 Teacher Spotlight: Celebrating A Legacy

Congratulations Mrs. Walk on retiring after a wonderful 35 years of teaching! Leigh Ann has taught Math and a little English over the years. What an amazing career. Thank you for your dedication and loyalty to the St. Elmo community. Enjoy retirement. Keep reading to learn more about this great teacher!

1.Tell us a little about yourself and your journey in education:
(What led you to teaching, where you started, or what has kept you inspired over the years?)
I decided to teach because when I started college as a business major, I hated it. I had always been pretty good at explaining things to my classmates, so I decided to go into teaching. I started my career here at St Elmo 35 years ago on the junior high end of the building. My intention was to only teach junior high, but around 16 years ago, I was asked to move to the high school end, and I have enjoyed it very much.

2.What has been the most rewarding part of your teaching career?
(A favorite memory, moment, or experience with students or colleagues)
One of the most rewarding aspects of teaching in the same community for so long is the number of students I have had the opportunity to teach that I still come into contact with today. A lot of former student’s children have been or are currently in my classes. I also have contact with many of my former students on social media. I enjoy seeing what they are doing now, and I also enjoy seeing pictures of their families. I am so proud of how most of them have turned out.

3.A favorite quote, motto, or phrase you’ve lived by—inside or outside the classroom:
Psalm 46:10 “Be still and know that I am God.” I find much comfort in this scripture.
Another quote I like is “Comparison is the thief of joy,” contributed to Theodore Roosevelt.

4.Best advice you’ve learned or would like to pass on to students or fellow educators:
Something that has always worked well for me is treating the students with respect even if they don’t treat me the same way. It becomes more difficult for them to be disrespectful when you are always kind and respectful to them.

5.What are you most looking forward to in retirement?
(Travel, hobbies, time with family, new adventures, or simply relaxing!)
I plan to spend a lot more time with my grandchildren in either babysitting or attending their activities. I will also be back subbing at the jr/sr high school.

6.A fun or little-known fact about you:
Other jobs I have had:
Worked at Dairy Queen
Worked in a magazine factory
Telephone operator
Resident assistant in a dorm
Bank teller
Desk clerk and breakfast hostess at a hotel

🎓Teacher Spotlight: Celebrating A Legacy

Lisa McHenry is retiring! This comes after 33 years of teaching in 2nd and 1st grade. I was fortunate enough to be a student of Mrs. McHenry and still remember speeding through math fact worksheets to try and be the first one done. Keep reading to learn more about this amazing teacher.

1. Tell us a little about yourself and your journey in education:
My journey in education came full circle. Having attended the St. Elmo School District as a student, I was shaped by the many wonderful teachers who walked those halls before me. From an early age, my heart was divided between two paths: I dreamed of becoming either a teacher or a veterinarian.
Following my passion for learning, I earned my Bachelor’s degree from Greenville College and later completed my Master’s degree at SIUE (Southern Illinois University Edwardsville).
When the St. Elmo School District hired me, it felt like coming home. I spent nearly my entire career dedicated to the growth of young minds in the 2nd Grade. For my final year, I transitioned to teaching 1st Grade, closing my career with the same joy I found at the beginning.

2. What has been the most rewarding part of your teaching career?
The most rewarding part of these years has always been the "aha" moment—that magical instant when a student finally grasps a difficult concept and their face lights up with understanding.

3. A favorite quote, motto, or phrase you’ve lived by—inside or outside the classroom:
I want all my students to know that they are…….
• Smart enough to solve hard problems.
• Kind enough to help the person sitting next to them.
• Brave enough to try new things.

4. Best advice you’ve learned or would like to pass on to students or fellow educators:
If I could leave my students and colleagues with one piece of advice, it would be this:
"Be kind to yourself and others, and show grace too."

5. What are you most looking forward to in retirement?
As I look toward the future, I am excited to trade the classroom for the open road. I look forward to traveling across the United States with my husband and our beloved fur babies, exploring new horizons together.

1. Tell us a little about yourself and your journey in education:
(What led you to teaching, where you started, or what has kept you inspired over the years?).
My family is full of educators. My mom, both grandmothers, Great Grandmother who was a principal in Canada, and a grandfather who was an accounting professor at SIU-E. The gift of knowledge, the love of learning and the ability to share it with others was portrayed through every important adult in my life. Inspiration comes through the reward of watching students learn and grow into adults that are capable of helping others and spreading the knowledge they earned while in my care.

2. What has been the most rewarding part of your teaching career?
(A favorite memory, moment, or experience with students or colleagues)
I have been so blessed to have shared my friends from other countries with my students through the years. They have communicated via FaceTime, writing and through classroom contests that required research work about the country. The opportunity to share my personal experience and my friends with my students is a memorable bond that I cherish.

3. A favorite quote, motto, or phrase you’ve lived by—inside or outside the classroom: Watch learning through the eyes of a child and see the true value of time, compassion, and patience.

4. Best advice you’ve learned or would like to pass on to students or fellow educators:
Life can be tough…but with perseverance, compassion and the ability to communicate your thoughts and actions with others, you will be able to solve any problem that you encounter. Believe in yourself!

5. What are you most looking forward to in retirement?
(Travel, hobbies, time with family, new adventures, or simply relaxing!)
I am looking forward to spending time with my 3 granddaughters, relaxing, and traveling. I am especially interested in visiting my Australian friend at her home again. My traveling dreams include; Scotland, Ireland and Wales.

6. A fun or little-known fact about you:
My mom was born in Canada, my stepmom was born in Japan and my best friend lives in Australia.

1.Tell me a little about yourself:
I am from Effingham. I attended Greenville University then I obtained my masters in clinical mental health counseling from Lincoln Christian University. I later went on to Northern Illinois University to obtain my endorsement in school counseling. I worked as a therapist at HopeSprings Counseling in Champaign, IL before returning to my alma mater, Greenville University, where I worked in the admissions office before joining the St. Elmo School District. I also coach tumbling at Jansen’s Power Tumbling.
2.Favorite Quote:
“If you don’t have time to do it right, you must have time to do it over.”
3.Best advice ever given?
From my tumbling coach-Work hard, do your best, and most importantly always have confidence in yourself.
From a previous supervisor-Create an environment of hospitality and be willing to be interruptible.
From my parents-Work hard, but make sure you have some fun along the way.
4.What do you like to do in your free time?
I’m not great at “relaxing”, so what free-time I do have is usually spent doing house projects, taking long walks, playing pickle-ball, shopping, being a part of ministry events, and spending time with my husband, family, and friends.
5.A little-known fact about you?
I can still do back-flips! I had the privilege of studying abroad in Israel while in college.

🏆 Teacher Spotlight - Brownstown Jr/Sr High School
Meet Jessica Sefton, this month's teacher spotlight recipient. She was kind enough to take time for a photo op before gearing up for a fun day including a pickleball tournament. Unfortunately, I could not stick around and be her partner, but it sounds like it will be a great time filled with team costumes and prizes! Keep reading to learn more about 20yr teaching vet, Mrs. Sefton.

1. Tell me a little about yourself: Married to my husband Dustin and have two kids; Sydney and Grady. Live in Brownstown. Graduated from Vandalia High School (2001). Got my bachelor and master’s degree from EIU. Currently teach Health and PE at Brownstown Jr/Sr High School. I’ve been the Athletic Director for two years for BSE sports. I am also the BSE JH Girls Basketball Coach and FCA leader. I’ve previously been the Elementary PE teacher and 5th/6th Brownstown Basketball Coach and HS Track Coach.

2. Favorite Quote: "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Philippians 4:13

3. Best advice ever given? “Build relationships first.” When students feel supported and cared for, they will behave better, work harder, and you will have less issues to deal with in your classroom. Fist bumps and “How did your game go last night?” go a long way in the eyes of your students. Take time to build those relationships with your students!

4. What do you like to do in your free time? I love to travel. I enjoy playing and watching sports (Go Illini!) I also love country music and attend concerts as much as I can.

5. A little-known fact about you? I work at Pinky’s (Effingham) during the summer.

1.Tell me a little about yourself:
I grew up in Virginia, but have called Altamont my hometown for over 15 years. I’ve been married to my husband for 12 years, and we have 3 boys- ages 12, 8, and 5. They keep us very busy! I enjoy reading, playing the fiddle, crafting, and just max-relaxing (poolside or beachside whenever possible). I’ve taught in a variety of settings, and this is my first year at St. Elmo. I’m really enjoying it! I love the community, the staff at the school, and the students- everyone has been so great!

2.Favorite Quote:
“Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

3.Best advice ever given?
“Maslow before Bloom.” Students' basic needs need to be met before they can learn the academics; a stressed brain cannot learn. Therefore, our first job as teachers is to check in with our students, build relationships with them, and help make sure those basic needs are met.

4.What do you like to do in your free time?
I like to hang out with my family, and read books- lots and lots of books!

5.A little-known fact about you?
While I’ve always wanted to be a teacher, I almost became an orthodontist instead. Ha! Thank goodness I followed my heart and went with teaching.
