KONKEY SOARS IN SENIOR SEASON DEBUT EARNING 2026 INAUGURAL STATE FARM PLAYER OF THE WEEK
The Geneva Vikings varsity football program kicked off their 2026 season with a 28-14 win at home against Libertyville High School last Friday night. Three of the Viking touchdowns were scored in the first quarter by one player – senior wide receiver Bennett Konkey. Konkey opened the game with a 99-yard kick return for touchdown, followed by two receiving touchdowns. He finished the night with four receptions for 178 yards and more than 280 all-purpose yards. Wearing the number 8 jersey, Konkey was chosen as the inaugural State Farm Player of the Week for the 2026 season by the coaching staff of Geneva’s varsity football team.
"Bennett was a difference-maker for us all night long. He set the tone on the very first play of the season, providing an immediate spark for our team and our entire stadium. From that point on, every time he touched the ball, he had the ability to change the game," stated Geneva Head Varsity Football Coach Troy “Boone” Thorgesen. “His explosive playmaking ability created momentum throughout the game, and his performance was a major reason we were able to come away with a win.” Coach Thorgesen presented Konkey with a specially inscribed Player of the Week football.
The Player of the Week award recognizes players who have made an exceptional contribution to that week’s varsity football game and demonstrated the ideals of the Viking football program. Celebrating its 16th season, the State Farm Player of the Week award is made possible by the donation from Agent Bill Nelson of commemorative footballs custom-printed with the opponent for each regular season game. Nelson, a resident of Geneva, has been a State Farm agent in St. Charles for over 25 years. To learn more, visit www.billnelsonagency.com.
