September is National Preparedness Month!
Northern Illinois weather can change quickly—from severe thunderstorms and tornadoes to flooding, high winds, and early-season cold. Take a few minutes this month to prepare your family and home with the following tips:
Sign up for weather alerts through your county or local municipality
Create an emergency kit with water, nonperishable food, flashlights, batteries, medications, and first-aid supplies
Know where to shelter during a tornado or severe storm—ideally in a basement or small interior room on the lowest level
Keep your phone, car, and emergency equipment charged
Review your insurance coverage and make sure you have current photos or an inventory of your belongings
Make a plan for pets, children, elderly family members, and anyone with special needs
A little preparation today can make a big difference when severe weather strikes. Are you prepared?
