With the holidays in full swing, it's easy to get caught up in the festivities and forget some of our favorite
holiday fire safety tips!

Being aware of fire safety tips can have a big impact in helping to keep your home safe while you are decorating during the holidays.

Even with all those Christmas tree fires, cooking equipment is the leading cause of home fires and injuries. According to the NFPA, many fires occur on Thanksgiving, Christmas day and Christmas Eve. Here are some things to remember:

-Avoid using candles if possible. Consider using battery-operated ones.
-Mantels are beautiful when covered with stockings and greenery. But these items are flammable. If you use your fireplace frequently, consider hanging these decorations somewhere else.
-Check the Christmas tree — confirm it has plenty of water, if it is a real tree, and it isn't near heat sources.
If you opt for an artificial tree, get one that is labeled as fire-resistant.
-When cooking, pay close attention to what you're doing and your surroundings.
Keep a fire extinguisher close by.
-Do not use your fireplace to burn wrapping paper, wreaths or trees.
-Have smoke detectors at least 10 feet from your stove, and test them monthly.
-Turn off decorations and lights when going to bed or when you leave your house.

Three storm shelters will open at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 9, to accommodate evacuees:

• Special Medical Needs: Freedom Crossing Academy, 1365 Shetland Drive, St. Johns
• Pet Friendly: South Woods Elementary School, 4750 State Road 206 West, Elkton
• General Population: Pedro Menendez High School, 600 State Road 206 West, St. Augustine

Residents who require transportation to a storm shelter should call the Emergency Management Citizen Information Hotline at 904-824-5550. Transportation will be provided for those in need.

While shelters provide safety throughout the storm, residents must bring supplies to maintain personal comfort. St. Johns County recommends that all evacuees bring their own bedding, including sleeping bags or air mattresses, pillows, sheets, and blankets. A five-day supply of water, non-perishable food, medication, diapers, and other personal items are also suggested. Please refer to the list below for additional supply suggestions.

• At least a five-day supply of medications, insulin, and a cooler if you are diabetic
• Personal grooming and hygiene items, feminine supplies
• Extra clothing, eyeglasses
• Books, magazines, cards, games, etc.
• Pillows, blankets, sheets, lawn chair/chaise lounge
• Flashlight and extra batteries, manual can opener

Quick update on Helene:
As of Sunday morning, there were 64 dead in five states, including 11 in Florida, and damage estimates sat at over $95 billion.
Much of the damage was from flooding which is NOT typically included in your homeowner's insurance polices and is written as a separate policy. We encourage all of our clients to contact our office so we can review your coverages and go over some cost effective options to insure against this type of loss.

Gov. Ron DeSantis said that the state has reopened its private Disaster Fund, which allows residents to make charitable contributions to help people affected by the storm.

Anyone in need of non-emergency information may call the State Assistance Information Line at 1-800-342-3557. DeSantis added that for the next two weeks, the Hope Florida Line will be open 24/7 for anyone who needs help with food, shelter, or other in the aftermath of Helene: 1-833-438-4673.

If you have any damages related to Helene, please reach out to our office or visit your carrier directly. We can be reached at (904) 824-7283.
