National Water Safety Month is coming to an end, but the Summer is just getting started! Be prepared with a boat safety equipment checklist!

You can't always prevent emergencies on the water, but you can help be more equipped to deal with them effectively. The U.S. Coast Guard suggests you have the following items on your boat:
• U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets (in the appropriate type and size for each person on board)
• Fire extinguishers
• Distress signals and sound devices (flares, orange flag, mirror, air horn and whistle)
• VHF radio equipment
• Charts of the local area
• Compass
• Anchor and extra line
• Tool kit for repairs
• Paddles
• Bailer or bilge pump
• Flashlight
• Spare battery
• First-aid and emergency kit
• Bucket
• Food and water
• Additional clothing (such as warm clothes, a hat and severe weather gear)
• Personal items (sunscreen, medicines and sunglasses)

A well-stocked boat safety kit can make all the difference in an emergency. Take the time to check your equipment before every trip so you’re ready for whatever the water may bring.

Wishing you a Happy (and Safe) Memorial Day Weekend!

As we celebrate the holiday, let’s also take a moment to remember that May is National Water Safety Month. With more boats on the water, peak traffic can mean less time to react—so it’s important to be prepared.

Boat safety tips for busy weekends:

🚤Slow down near docks, marinas, and crowded areas—watch for people in the water and fast-changing visibility.
👀Assign a lookout (especially during turns, dock approaches, and busy crossings).
🪧Follow safe speeds and keep a proper lookout at all times—assume others may not see you.
🛟Wear life jackets and make sure everyone has one that fits (kids included).
🗺️Plan your route ahead of time and keep an eye on weather/water conditions.
🍹Avoid alcohol and distractions—keep hands on the helm and focus on the ride.
🤽‍♀️Stay clear of swimmers and other vessels, and use signals/courtesies as needed.
🧯Check safety gear before you go: fire extinguisher, whistle/horn, lights, first aid, and a way to call for help.

Wishing you a joyful Memorial Day weekend—have fun out there and stay safe on the water! 🌊🚤

🏍️ Riding with a passenger can be a great experience—but it requires teamwork and safety awareness. Before you hit the road, make sure both rider and passenger know the essentials for a smooth and safe ride. 🏍️

Discuss motorcycle safety and proper riding techniques with your passenger. Cover these basics:
• Don't get on the bike until the kickstand is up and the driver says to do so.
• Wrap your hands around the driver's waist to hold on.
• Keep your legs clear of the hot exhaust.
• Lean with the driver when turning. It might help to focus your eyes on the back of your driver's helmet.
• Avoid sudden movements that could affect the bike's handling.
• Keep your feet on the footrests — don't put them down at a stop.

Following these passenger riding tips helps keep everyone secure and comfortable on every trip. Communication and proper technique make all the difference—so ride smart, ride safe, and enjoy the journey together! May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month—a perfect time to prioritize your safety on the road while enjoying the freedom of the ride. Whether you’re a seasoned rider or just starting out, taking a few extra precautions can make all the difference. To help you stay safe and confident behind the handlebars, here are essential tips for preventing motorcycle accidents and protecting yourself every time you hit the road.

Tips to Help Prevent Motorcycle Accidents

Motorcycle Inspection
Regularly check your bike’s lights, signals, mirrors, brakes, & fuel system. Bikes with anti-lock braking systems (ABS) can help prevent skidding.

Safety Courses
New riders should take a motorcycle safety course, & experienced riders can benefit from refresher courses. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) offers online and in-person classes.

Gear Up
Wear protective gear such as leather or durable long pants & sleeves, gloves, eye protection, & sturdy boots. Use a white full-face Department of Transportation-approved helmet, replacing it every 3–5 years or after a crash.

Be Seen
Increase visibility by wearing bright colors & reflective elements, using your headlight at all times, riding in the lane section most visible to drivers, & honking if unsure you’re seen.

Be Alert
Watch for distracted drivers, road hazards, & sudden lane changes. Stay cautious near parked cars and intersections, where left-turn collisions are common.

Don’t Drink or Speed
Avoid alcohol & obey speed limits to reduce accident risk.

Avoid Bad Weather
If riding in rain or wind, wear appropriate gear & adjust your riding.

Obey Traffic Laws
Follow all rules, including using turn signals & staying in your lane.

Safety for Other Drivers
Motorcyclists have equal rights on the road. Check blind spots, signal intentions, & maintain a safe following distance. Never share lanes with motorcycles & watch for their signals & sudden moves.

We had a great time at the K9s United race this past weekend supporting an organization that does incredible work for law enforcement K9 teams.
K9s United helps provide equipment, training, and protection for police dogs—making sure they’re just as prepared and protected as the officers they serve alongside.
I was especially proud to have some extra help at our tent this year—my daughters jumped in and did an awesome job connecting with everyone who stopped by.
Always grateful to be part of events like this that bring our community together for a great cause. 🐾

WILDFIRE DEFENSIBLE SPACE: PROTECT YOUR HOME 🔥

Defensible space is the safety zone around your home that helps slow or stop wildfire spread—and gives firefighters room to defend your property.

Build Your Zone:
• Create 30–100+ feet of defensible space (expand if near heavy vegetation)
• Keep the first 30 feet well-maintained and clear of hazards

Reduce Fire Risk:
• Space trees 10–15 feet apart
• Remove ladder fuels (vines/shrubs that carry fire upward)
• Prune tree limbs 6–10 feet off the ground
• Trim overhanging branches near your home

Landscape Smart:
• Choose less-flammable plants
• Break up vegetation with grass, walkways, or gravel
• Avoid planting flammable species close to structures
• Use gravel or stone instead of mulch within 5 feet of your home

Create Separation:
• Keep all vegetation from touching your home
• Remove dense plant groupings near structures, decks, and eaves

Be Prepared:
• Store firewood & propane tanks at least 50 feet away
• Keep a 100-foot hose ready for quick access

Defensible space can make the difference—even when firefighters aren’t immediately on scene.

It’s National Pet Day, and we’re celebrating the pets that are part of our team’s families 🐾

From dogs and cats to birds and more, these companions are a big part of life outside the office—and we know that’s true for many families here in St. Johns County.

It’s also a good reminder that pets are part of the family in more ways than one. Some auto policies can help cover pets if they’re injured in an accident, and we also offer options for pet insurance.

If you ever have questions about protecting every member of your family, we’re here to help.

Drop a photo of your pet in the comments—we’d love to see them!

We believe in being Good Neighbors—and these students are a great example of what that looks like.

It was an honor to sponsor the February Character Counts award for Caring at Picolata Crossing Elementary and recognize students who are making a difference through kindness, compassion, and leadership.

and I had a great time celebrating with them and handing out some treats and goodie bags!

Big thanks to Picolata PTA for including us—we’re proud to support our local schools here in St. Johns County.
