My husband has always been a thoughtful gift giver, and this Christmas he gave me something that felt especially meaningful for this season of life.

I've always enjoyed reading, but for a long time most of what I read was either for work or from the kids' school. Lately, I've been making the time to read again, not because I have extra time, but because I'm realizing how much I missed it.

Sometimes I wonder what the kids think when they see me reading. Do they see me taking time away from them, or do they see someone making space for something she loves? I'm hoping it's the latter, and maybe, just maybe, that love of books will rub off on them too.

So now I need recommendations: what are some really good books you've read lately? The kind you'd pay a little extra for in hardcover so it can earn a permanent spot in the library.

A few years ago, I started sharing a simple idea with my kids: experience creates perspective, and perspective builds wisdom.

When real-life moments happen, I try to pause and help them recognize the perspective they've gained. Usually, I get the familiar "Moooom…" the kind that says, "We get it."

But recently, my oldest said something thoughtful, and I responded, "You sound like you have wisdom." Without missing a beat, she said, "That's because I have perspective, Mom!"

This experience helped ease a small measure of the mom guilt I often carry.

Feeling a little under the weather these past couple of days, and then my oldest daughter quietly made and brought me a cup of tea, all on her own.

It's such a simple thing, but it meant the world.

Grateful for her sweet heart today. ❤️☕

Last week I had the honor of receiving the Rotary gavel as our club's next President, but my favorite part was having my kids there to see it.

Of course, the afternoon wasn't complete without my son winning the 50/50 raffle (thank you to whomever bought him the ticket)… and one of my daughters immediately declaring, "That's not fair!" 😂

I'm grateful for the opportunity and excited for the year ahead!

At the end of a family dinner, one of my children decided it was the perfect time to see just how much patience I actually have.

For the next hour, I calmly followed her around the restaurant and we talked. No yelling, no threats, no bribery (which, honestly, felt like a parenting miracle). I simply explained my expectations, loved my child through the moment, and eventually she chose, completely on her own, to do what I'd asked in the first place.

Just before we left, a woman I'd never met walked over and quietly placed a folded napkin on the table. She had apparently witnessed the entire standoff and felt compelled to leave me a note.

Most days, parenting feels like I'm making it up as I go. Every once in a while, though, a complete stranger reminds me that maybe I'm doing better than I think.
