KHARG ISLAND: Iran’s mainland Gulf coast is mostly too shallow for very large crude carriers. Kharg sits next to deeper water, so tankers can load offshore without entering shallow ports or the Shatt al-Arab.

Kharg Island handles about 90% of Iran’s crude exports. Oil is pumped in pipelines from the mainland to the island.

Why don't we just send the Marines in to take the island and its oil facility? In a recent interview, General David Petraeus explained that we can easily take it, but we can't hold it. We can't supply the Marines, and we cannot protect them from constant drone attacks. [Heavy sigh]

My point is that commercial real estate lenders are unpredictable. Residential loans are an exercise in math. If the deal satisfies the numbers, the loan gets made.

Commercial loans, in contrast, are a matter of finding a loan officer, not on vacation and not fighting with his wife, who is in the mood to lend TODAY. This situation is a numbers game.

ThIS is the first time in the modern S&P Global record (going back to 1990) that two consecutive years produced no new deposits meeting the 2-million-ounce threshold.

If you do buy gold, I recommend you buy recognizable one-ounce coins (Maple Leafs, Krugerrands, etc.) that you can take home and hide in your backyard. Don't buy "collectables". They are a con.

Much of the gold sold over the past 40 years has been paper gold, where some dealer sells a promise to deliver gold in the future. When the day came to deliver the gold, the dealer just pays you the difference between the spot value and the paper value. You must take physical delivery, like China is doing!

Recent U.S. cases of “flesh-eating” bacteria have increased sharply. Vibrio vulnificus is a bacterium that lives in warm coastal and brackish waters. It can cause severe wound infections (including necrotizing fasciitis) or illness from eating raw or undercooked shellfish, especially oysters. About 1 in 5 severe V. vulnificus infections is fatal, sometimes within just 1–2 days.

Louisiana has reported a sharp rise in cases reported: 9 cases and 5 deaths so far this year (vs. a typical average of ~7 cases and 1 death). All reported cases involved open wounds exposed to seawater.

Florida has confirmed 12 V. vulnificus infections and 1 death. The remaining cases are scattered among the remaining states.

On Thursday, August 27, 2026, President Trump signed an executive order directing that Lake Ontario be renamed “Lake America” for U.S. federal government use. He announced it as “effective immediately” during an Oval Office signing ceremony and compared it to his January 2025 action renaming the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America.”

The order instructs Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to update the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), which the U.S. Board on Geographic Names uses for official federal maps, documents, and communications. [Trump is pretty unhappy with Canada.]
