With a Medicare supplement plan, Medicare is primary and the supplement is secondary. A supplement is purchased through a private health insurance company. When you have a service performed, Medicare pays first then the supplement pays.

Medicare supplements do not include prescription drug coverage. You will need to enroll in a stand-alone Part D plan to cover your medications.

With a supplement, you can see any doctor who accepts original Medicare. You don't need a referral to see specialists with this type of plan. You can schedule appointments with doctors anywhere in the country as long as they accept original Medicare.

What’s a Medicare Advantage Plan?
You can get your Medicare benefits through Original Medicare, or a MedicareAdvantage Plan (like an HMO or PPO). If you have Original Medicare, the government pays for Medicare benefits when you get them. Medicare Advantage Plans, sometimes called “Part C” or “MA Plans,” are offered by private companies approved by Medicare. Medicare pays these companies to cover your Medicare
benefits.
If you join a Medicare Advantage Plan, the plan will provide all of your Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) coverage.
This is different than a Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) policy.
