I’m particularly passionate about helping people navigate two of the most important yet often overlooked areas of retirement planning: Social Security and long-term care. Saving for retirement is only part of the equation. The other question is how those savings will eventually become a reliable retirement paycheck.

This article highlights an important retirement planning challenge: making sure the income you can count on each month is enough to support the lifestyle you’ve worked so hard to build.

The investment giant warns that many retirees face a gap between income and expenses.

Most people spend decades preparing financially for retirement.

Very few spend time preparing for what happens if they or a loved one eventually need long-term care.

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Kristy Osborn on the Legacy Years Podcast to talk about this very issue. We covered what long-term care really is, what it costs, why Medicare usually doesn't cover it, and some of the planning strategies families should know before a crisis happens.

If you're approaching retirement or helping aging parents, I think you'll find this conversation helpful.

One of the biggest retirement blind spots is assuming family will simply “figure it out” if care is ever needed. The reality is most adult children are juggling careers, raising families, and managing their own financial responsibilities. Planning ahead isn’t about expecting the worst — it’s about protecting the people you love from difficult decisions later.

MYTH: "My kids will take care of me."
TRUTH: They will. And it'll cost them more than money.

This is the myth we hear most often. Your children love you, and that's exactly the problem.

Because when there's no plan, love becomes the plan. And love doesn't pay for a home health aide. It just means your kids say yes when they should say no.

56% of people aged 65+ will need some form of long-term care. Without a plan in place, that responsibility falls on the people closest to you. And here's what most families don't talk about: partners and adult children often take on that caregiving role themselves, not because it's easy, but because they don't want to spend down assets or lose what they hoped to inherit. So they sacrifice their own health, their careers, and their relationships instead.

That's not protection. That's just a different kind of loss. You don't want that for them. And deep down, they're hoping you'll have a plan too.

The earlier you plan, the more options you have and the less your family has to carry.

Talk to a CLTC professional today. They're trained specifically to help you build a care plan that protects your family, not burdens them.

Thanksgiving gives us a moment to slow down, breathe, and appreciate what truly matters — peace, security, and the people we love. It’s the same sense of stability many hope to feel about their finances as they near retirement.

If financial worries creep in during the holidays, my Safe Money Guide can help. It explains how guarantees reduce risk and bring more long-term confidence. Comment “GUIDE” or message me for a copy.

Wishing you and your family a warm Thanksgiving!
