Dear Law Abiding Tax Payer,
This is in response to the bail reform issue that has been sweeping the nation. There are many who feel that the bail system as it stands is unjust. The citizens that have been incarcerated are being held in jail pending a monetary bail that must be posted and some cannot afford this. To you, it seems that the bail system could stand to be changed because you do not have a need for it and it seems to be broken based on the information you are being given. You believe that this issue does not concern you. You are wrong. You may feel you do not have a reason to be concerned with those that are incarcerated. To you, a law-abiding citizen, none of this is your concern because you are not breaking any laws. Again, you are wrong. The issue at hand has no warrant in your life. You… are… wrong.
Let’s face it, the ongoing issue is monetary in this fight. We are not here to push for increased monetary responsibility to the citizens. We are here to stop that increase to our citizens. Where are the funds coming from if we take away commercial bail? Tax dollars. With this new movement of bail reform, every citizens’ tax dollars will need to be spent to support the growing crime rates. It will not be free I assure you. How can it? Who will be monitoring those that are released? Who will complete the risk assessments? Are they volunteers that do not get paid? No, they are not. They are government employees, and more will need to be hired to accommodate those that are being released who would have otherwise been monitored by bail agents. Bail agents currently monitor their clients at no cost to you. That will change if this reform takes place.
To add fuel to the fire, I ask you to seek out the information that is being given on the states that have adapted to bail reform. Many are frustrated that the bail reform system is not working. Ask the victim’s families who have been questioning why a defendant was released and unaccounted for on this new bail reform just to commit new crimes after released against them. No one was there to monitor them. No one is claiming responsibility.
The bail agents make every aspect their responsibility. They protect the State, the victims and the Defendants. They are there to ensure the Defendant appears in court, maintains their court ordered conditions and does not violate any new laws. When a Defendant does not do as expected, the bail agent returns them to court or jail. In addition, a bail agent is the first contact a Defendant has outside of incarceration that listens and helps. They help the Defendant seek employment and/or drug counseling and can be a listening ear and encouragement to better themselves.
I ask you one question. Why are we wanting to fix a system that has worked for over 200 years? To protect those that are accused of a crime? Who is going to protect you, the law-abiding tax payer? Why aren’t you being considered? Are your rights not as important or valid?
Stand up for your rights and we will stand with you. You deserve better than this.
