We are excited to announce our spotlight for June and our first $1,000 Lifting-Up Scholarship winner……Dominic Arellano!!!!

If you ever need a helping hand, a warm smile, or just someone to talk to at school, Dominic is the person to find. Nominated by both his peers and school faculty, Dominic has earned a reputation as a student who consistently spreads kindness, goodwill, and positivity throughout the hallways. For Dominic, being there for others isn't just a casual habit—it is a personal mission. "We never truly know what someone else is going through," Dominic says. "Everyone needs help in some way. If we have the ability to help someone, we absolutely should."

Dominic's ability to connect with people stems from his open nature. He comfortably moves between many different groups at school, treating everyone he meets with the same baseline of respect and warmth. This community-first mindset keeps him incredibly busy both inside and outside the classroom.

Dominic has played soccer since the age of six, competing through both middle school and high school. He balances his academic workload with two jobs, working at the local YMCA and Taco Bell. Through sports and customer service, Dominic has mastered the art of working with diverse groups of people. He believes his peers nominated him for this spotlight because they know his door is always open.

When asked about his personal inspiration, Dominic points directly to his father, who works in the ER in the radiology department. "He is the hardest working person I know," Dominic shares. "He loves his family more than anything." Dominic strives to mirror that same deep dedication to family and strong work ethic in his own daily life.

This fall, Dominic will take his talents, his work ethic, and his signature smile to Radford University. While college brings a brand-new environment, Dominic has no plans to change who he is. He intends to remain the same outgoing, approachable person campus-wide.

For Dominic, the formula for a successful future is simple.
"Building relationships is always the very first part," he says. "No matter where I am, if anyone needs anything, they can always come to me."

🎉 May Community Spotlight + Cookie Delivery #2 🍪

We’re proud to recognize this month’s spotlight… Jeff Black!

Jeff was nominated by multiple members of our community—and it’s easy to see why.
A true cornerstone of Caroline County, Jeff balances a full-time teaching career in Spotsylvania while dedicating countless hours to lift up our community. While many know him as the Western District Supervisor, his greatest impact is felt through his hands-on commitment to helping others.

From advocating for local water issues to hosting trivia nights, Jeff is always finding ways to bring people together. He plays a key role in the Ladysmith Ruritan Club—supporting trade school scholarships and organizing holiday meals and gifts for families in need. He also leads the county’s largest fundraiser, the Polar Plunge, and organizes quarterly Adopt-a-Highway cleanups.
Those who know Jeff describe him as someone who “never asks for credit.” Whether he’s welcoming a new business or jumping into freezing water to support a cause, his people-first leadership speaks for itself.

When we asked Jeff about the recognition, he said: “I don’t like to be in the spotlight—I just want to help the community.” He also made it clear that none of this is done alone: He said he is blessed to work as a team alongside so many wonderful people to lift up our community.
As Phil Jackson once said: “The strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team.”

👏 Thank you, Jeff—and thank you to everyone who continues to make our community such a special place.

We are EXCITED to share our SPOTLIGHT for the Month of April, and the first recipient of our cookie delivery 🍪….

🚩DEDEE AND DENNY WALDROP!🚩

“Dedee and Denny have had a trying last year. I’m sure they could use some sweets and a smile!”

A Year of Trials and Quiet Miracles

To say Dedee and Denny have had a trying year would be an understatement.

Last year, Denny survived a devastating accident — over 40 broken bones, a shattered pelvis and rib cage, and a leg nearly torn away. In an instant, life changed.

They’ve always been the kind of people who give to others, so learning to receive was humbling. But in that space, something beautiful happened. Denny began keeping track of the “miracles” he’s experienced — cards still arriving months later, neighbors stepping in to help with farming, and a community that continues to show up with kindness in both big and small ways.

They remind all of us that even in life’s hardest seasons, gratitude can take root. That miracles often look like people showing up, again and again. And that sometimes, the most inspiring hearts belong to those who have every reason to feel broken—but choose instead to be thankful.

Their story is a reminder that even during our most challenging moments, kindness multiplies, gratitude grows, and miracles often look like people simply showing up for one another.

This month we are honored and humbled to express our gratitude for the amazing members in our community who stepped up to help others during the past couple weeks. Here are just a few amongst many: The V-DOT workers who worked around the clock to help clear our roadways, all emergency responders who put their own lives on the line to respond to the calls from people who needed them, and also many people in the community who stepped up in ways they didn’t have to.

There have been countless accounts shared across social media. Here are a some amazing examples we saw of “Lifting Up Your Community”:
1. “I would like to send a thank you to the gentleman on the red tractor that plowed our driveway and made it easier to get in and out. Not sure who it was, but it is greatly appreciated.”
2. “Whoever was the sweet soul that plowed my driveway thank you so much! I missed it happening and feel awful! I wasn't able to thank you or pay you. There are good people left!”
3. “Shout out to the random good ol’boy with a farm tractor and plow cruising this morning. He passed my house and saw me fighting for my life with a plastic shovel. He turned around, backed down my driveway and cleared it with one pass. I ran into the house to grab him some cash and he was gone before I could catch him. You Sir, are exactly what I love about this community, God bless you!”

Kindness is one of the greatest gifts you can bestow upon another. If someone is in need, lend them a helping hand. Do not wait for a thank you. True kindness lies within the act of giving without the expectation of something in return. Jennifer Pahlka said, “When one neighbor helps another, we strengthen our communities.” Thank you for all of your acts of kindness that have ultimately strengthened us as a community!

If you have an example of kindness that you have witnessed or experienced, please reach out and share!!! Please reach out to [email protected] or give us a call at 804-633-4242.

We are excited to announce our spotlight for January…..
Cristian Cook-Romero!!!

Cristian is a 13 year old young man who enjoys playing tennis, basketball, baseball video games, and performing in the theatre. He is serving as the President of Jr. Beta club, a non-profit educational youth organization, that promotes academic achievement, character, leadership, and service.

Cristian has participated and helped organize many activities including, helping the homeless in “Hope in our Stockings,” where they filled socks with food and hygiene items, played games with the elderly, placed wreaths in “Wreaths across America,” and took gift bags to first responders at Lee Hill Medical Center. He also helped deliver Easter Eggs to the elderly. Cristian says, “Kids are like puppies to the elderly, they love them!” This upcoming February Cristian and the Jr. Beta club are planning on participating in the “Coldest Night of the Year Walk” where they hope to raise awareness of homelessness. They are helping raise funds for the MICAH House.

When asked why it's important to reach out and help others, Cristian said, “I see people who don’t have what I have, so I want to help them. When I see people who are lonely, I want to share joy with them.” He also shared that it’s important as teenagers to be nice, and help as much as you can. We may not realize how many opportunities we actually have to help others. “Don’t be a bully, be nice to everyone, we don’t know what people are going through. Don’t cause problems where there doesn’t need to be problems, be the solution!” Cristian is inspired by his mom to do good things. She pushes him to be the best he can be. She helps take him wherever he needs to go, and overall she is just amazing!

Cristian is wise beyond his years, in fact mom said, “he has an old soul.” She said that she encourages him to try things for a season, and you may discover that you enjoy something new. She enjoys learning with her son, and he has always been a very bright child who is loving and caring toward others.

We are grateful for Cristian and his example, that no matter what your age….we can all make a difference! Thank you for reaching out to those around you in love and kindness! Our caroling event was a great success! A HUGE THANK YOU to each family that came and sang, shared their musical talents on the violins and piano, and brought so much joy to those in the Bowling Green Rehab Center. We couldn’t have done this without our amazing community. We were told by many there they were so happy to have us and how much they enjoyed it! It brought tears to their eyes. We look forward to next year!

We are excited to share our spotlight for December!
The following is an experience shared by Susana Womack about a member of our community at the Ladysmith Food Lion.

One night recently there was some political turmoil in Washington, DC, and Susana was feeling a little uncertain. Like many of others, she had stopped at the local grocery store to stock up on a few essentials. While at the store, her mind was distracted thinking about the struggles that our nation was facing. Susana went to the self checkout and asked for $40.00 cash back after checking out her groceries. She then left the store forgetting that just moments earlier she had selected cash back. Once she got to her car and loaded her groceries, she remembered the cash and rushed back inside. Susana went to the register and the money was gone. She spoke to the manager to see if anyone had turned in the money. Sadly, the answer was no. Realizing that maybe someone needed the money more than she did, Susana left the store.

A few days later she was again at the Food Lion, and this time she decided not to go to the self check- out. There was one person in front of her, a gentleman in a wheelchair who she had never seen before. The manager that was working that day happened to be the manager she had spoken to the night she forgot her money. She asked again if the money had been turned in. The man in front of her turned around and said, “This is your money! I was the person in line after you the night you left it. I took it and tried to find you outside, but I couldn’t find you.” He gave the money back! It showed Susana that people can be really honest. He didn’t have to say anything, he could have kept the money and no one would have ever known. What are the odds that she ended up behind him in line days later and at the same time that day was nothing short of a miracle.

Thank you Susana for sharing this experience with us. Thank you to the unknown gentleman who showed honesty and kindness! Aesop said, “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted”. Let us remember that as we begin this Christmas season. A friendly smile, a kind word, being honest, opening the door for the person behind us, sending a card to someone who may be lonely or delivering a treat to a neighbor…we may never know the impact our one small act of kindness may have!
