I spent 25 years as a public school teacher. One of the many vexing issues I had to deal with was health insurance. The rates are stupid high, especially if you have your family on the plan.
If you are a teacher looking at your district's health care offerings and wondering how in the world you can afford the premiums, give me a call. Let's talk about your situation. There is no one perfect plan but I make it my business to come up with options.

Medicare Supplements are insurance policies that help to bridge the gaps between what Medicare will pay and the patient is responsible for (this is where the term “Medigap” originated). Plans are designated by letters A-D, F, G, and K-N and standardized according to Medicare regulations. That is, a Plan A from Famous Insurance Co. will be the same as a Plan A from Unknown Insurance. The only difference would be the premium price and possibly customer service.
So how would someone choose one company’s plan over another’s? Price is an obvious factor. A company’s reputation is also an another important. People will sometimes choose the company they used for health care or life insurance in the past and feel comfortable.

Medicare started out with two sections, Part A and Part B, which are sometimes called Original Medicare. Part A was for in-patient hospital care, and Part B was for out-patient care, like your regular doctor office visits.
Most people will not pay premiums for Part A. There is a $1736 deductible for a hospital stay. All other expenses for the first 60 days are paid by Medicare. After that, there is a $434 copayment for days 61-90, $868 for days for days 91-150, and after 150 days Medicare coverage ends. Notice that is for a hospital stay. It is possible to have more than one deductible in a year if you have more than 60 days between admissions.
Part B does have a monthly premium of $202.90 for most people, which is usually taken out of Social Security payments. Then there is an annual deductible of $283, with co-payments of 20% for most services.
If you are doing the math as you read, you probably figured out that even with Medicare, you are open to the risk of enormous medical expenses. To protect themselves, seniors have two options: Medicare Supplements (or Medigap Plans) and Medicare Advantage Plans. We will look at the supplements in the next essay.

So what the heck is Medicare anyway?
If you look on a paystub you will see a line for F**A (Federal Insurance Contributions Act) withholding. A part of this money goes to fund Medicare, which is a health insurance program run by the federal government. Medicare is usually associated with healthcare for the elderly, but it is also used by people with certain disabilities or long-term illnesses.
Going on Medicare is regarded as part of getting older, but we also dread it, like getting older itself. Like all federal programs it is full of rules, regulations, exceptions, and special cases. In the next few weeks, I will post short items explaining Medicare, and I hope putting peoples’ minds at ease.
*Please note! The information posted will be general in nature and for educational purposes only. If you have questions about how these rules apply specifically to you or a family member, reach out to me and I will be happy to help.

At the Smoke Sessions Marketday
For your healthcare and life insurance needs

03/05/2026

I spent 25 years in the public schools teaching Orchestra. As I neared retirement I wanted something else to do, and a friend encouraged me to explore health and life insurance.

One of the things that attracted me to health insurance is the opportunity to help people. Health coverage can be daunting and confusing, with so many regulations, companies and plans, and plus the bureaucracies around them often seem hostile and unfriendly.

My favorite author said, “Trees have many enemies, but few advocates,” and I think that applies to healthcare. I want to be the one who helps make sense of all this and find the plan to fit your needs. I want to be an advocate for you and your family.
