Public Service Announcement: Winter Storm Preparedness – Protect Your Home and Vehicle
As a significant winter storm approaches our area, now is the time to take proactive steps to protect your home, vehicles, and financial well-being. Severe cold, ice, snow, and power outages can lead to costly damage, much of which can be minimized with advance preparation.
Home Insurance Considerations
Prevent frozen pipes: Insulate exposed pipes, allow faucets to drip during extreme cold, and maintain adequate heat inside your home.
Prepare for power outages: Have flashlights, batteries, and a safe alternative heat source available. Never use generators or grills indoors.
Roof and exterior protection: Clear gutters if possible, and be mindful of ice dams, which can lead to interior water damage.
Know your coverage: Most homeowners' policies cover sudden and accidental damage (such as burst pipes), but neglect or long-term maintenance issues may not be covered.
Auto Insurance Considerations
Avoid unnecessary travel: Icy roads significantly increase the risk of accidents.
Park wisely: If possible, park vehicles in a garage or away from trees and power lines.
Coverage check: Comprehensive coverage typically applies to storm-related damage such as falling trees, ice, or hail—liability-only policies do not.
Emergency readiness: Keep a winter kit in your vehicle, including blankets, water, a flashlight, and a phone charger.
Documentation Matters
If damage occurs:
Take photos and videos as soon as it is safe.
Mitigate further damage where possible.
Contact your insurance professional promptly for guidance on next steps.
