Dragonflies hunt airborne prey by predicting where a target is going, then steering onto an interception path instead of simply chasing behind.

That skill makes them unusually effective aerial predators.

Their mosquito control starts even earlier underwater, where dragonfly nymphs eat mosquito larvae before those insects ever take flight.

A 2023 meta-analysis covering 31 studies found one nymph ate about 40 mosquito larvae per day on average.

Dragonflies therefore attack mosquitoes in two life stages.

Tiny predator, surprisingly large ecological job.
