Tony Becerra
Antonio Becerra
Antonio “Tony” G. Becerra was born on September 3, 1925, in Needville, Texas, and grew up in Rosenberg, Texas. His parents were originally from Mexico, and his father started a business on the Northside of Rosenberg, Becerra's Grocery and Meat Market, where Tony learned many skills and found a passion for helping the community. He graduated from Rosenberg High School, earned an associate degree from Wharton County Junior College, and studied pre-law at the University of Houston.
Tony Becerra was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II and assigned to the 103rd Combat Engineers of the 28th Infantry Division in the European Theater. One day, during the Battle of the Bulge, his unit was on a mission when it came under enemy attack. He was captured and became a prisoner of war under the Germans. Tony remained a POW for five months until he and his friends decided to try for a daring escape in 1945 and succeeded. He received an honorable discharge in 1945 and was awarded the Bronze Star for his service. That experience alone forever changed his life.
Tony was a champion for veterans and a founding member of the American G.I. Forum on the Northside of Rosenberg, which advocated for minority rights and fought discrimination. He was a lifelong area resident, businessman, and community leader who owned and operated several businesses, including Tony's Lounge, Modern Barbershop, Palladium Ballroom, and Tony Becerra Insurance Company.
Tony’s civic engagement included serving as a voter precinct judge for many years, District Chairman for the Galveston/Houston area, and Rosenberg City Councilman from 1992 to 2005. He sponsored and managed a baseball team of ex-veterans for 15 years. The City of Rosenberg honored his lifelong service by naming Tony Becerra Park in his memory. He was also recognized by local Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 3903, Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst, and Rosenberg Mayor Vincent Morales for his military service and time as a prisoner of war.
Tony was instrumental in supporting the opening of The Lord’s Kitchen, a local nonprofit helping those facing homelessness, hunger, and addiction. He provided scholarships to organizations such as the Fort Bend Hispanic Heritage Forum and Hispanics Offering People Education (HOPE), and supported community education.
Tony passed away on March 31, 2018. His legacy of service, leadership, and advocacy continues to inspire the Rosenberg community and beyond. The opening of Becerra Elementary School stands as a testament to his compassion, leadership, and lasting impact on the Lamar CISD community.
