“A few months ago, a client called me and said he wanted to cancel his life insurance policy.
He had recently retired, his income had decreased, and he was struggling to pay his bills. He felt canceling the policy was the only option.
Instead of processing the cancellation over the phone, I asked if we could meet for coffee.
We talked about his situation. I listened more than I spoke.
I told him that canceling the policy would be easy. Then I shared something I believe every client deserves to know:
"My recommendation isn't about my commission. My responsibility is to help you make the best decision for your family."
I asked him one question:
"If things are difficult financially today, how would your family manage if you weren't here tomorrow?"
Together, we found a solution that fit his budget. Rather than canceling his coverage completely, he decided to keep a smaller policy that he could comfortably afford.
A few months later, I received a phone call from his brother telling me that my client had passed away.
I attended the funeral. As I met his family, I realized something I'll never forget.
That policy wasn't just a contract.
It represented groceries, utility bills, and financial support for a wife and two daughters during one of the most difficult seasons of their lives.
That experience reminded me why I chose this profession over 11 years ago.
Life insurance isn't about expecting the worst.
It's about loving your family enough to prepare for the unexpected.
I'm grateful my client trusted me enough to have one more conversation before making a final decision.
Sometimes the most important thing we do isn't selling a policy.
It's helping someone make a decision they'll never have the chance to make again.
Shared with permission of the family omitted and identifying details changed to protect their privacy.”
