Family Fire Safety: Home Checklist 🔥🏠🧯
A few quick steps can make a big difference. Share this with your household and run a practice drill together.
✅ Alarms: Install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms on every level and near bedrooms; test monthly and refresh batteries yearly.
✅ Escape plan: Map two ways out of each room, pick a meeting spot outside, and practice a 2‑minute drill—day and night.
✅ Bedroom safety: Sleep with doors closed to slow smoke; keep pathways clear.
✅ Kitchen safety: Stay in the kitchen when cooking, turn pot handles inward, and keep a lid nearby to smother grease flames (avoid water).
✅ Heaters & candles: Keep a 3‑foot clear zone, plug space heaters directly into a wall outlet, and blow out candles when leaving the room.
✅ Electrical: Don’t overload outlets; replace damaged cords; use power strips with surge protection.
✅ Dryer & fireplace: Clean the lint trap and exterior vent; have chimneys inspected; place cooled ashes in a metal can outside.
✅ Kids & matches: Store matches/lighters out of reach; teach kids to tell an adult if they find them.
✅ Extinguisher: Keep an ABC extinguisher handy and learn PASS—Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep.
✅ Address visibility: Make sure house numbers are easy to read for responders.
✅ Pets & essentials: Include pets in your plan; keep leashes/crates near exits; gather basic supplies and key documents.
