The vast majority of Canadian exports enter the U.S. duty-free under the rules of the USMCA trade agreement. Canadas central bank reports that 100% of energy exports and 95% of other exports meet the strict regional content rules required by the CUSMA trade pact.
Trade data shows that roughly 85% to 92% of total Canadian goods cross the U.S. border without paying any tariffs or duties.
While broad or targeted tariffs implemented by the Trump Administration are often announced for political reasons, goods that follow the trade agreements rules are legally shielded from those extra costs.
