EMS Workforce numbers

Good news for the field: Michigan’s EMT count has grown from roughly 12,000 in 2021 to nearly 15,000 as of October 1. State officials credit grants that lowered the barrier to entering EMS education. Paramedic numbers are also trending up, with a goal of reaching 10,000. The challenge now is getting those providers into rural communities, where it’s hard to compete with higher pay in Southeast Michigan.

Lithium-ion battery technology is rapidly evolving—so the fire service must evolve with it. The question is, what needs to evolve—fireground tactics, fire management tools, or both?
The short answer? New tactics and updated strategies are called for, but new tools, in most cases, are not.

Studies by UL Research Institutes’ Fire Safety Research Institute demonstrate that the most effective fire service response lies in updating our understanding of how lithium-ion batteries behave as fuel.

MI EMS!

Michigan EMS is moving to a new licensing and data management system. Implementation starts in January, beginning with personnel, then agencies, vehicles, and medical control authorities. If you renew after October 1, 2027, you’ll need to use the new system. Make sure your contact information is current in the system now so you don’t run into audit or expiration problems later.

You know what the fire service has improved upon? Getting a saftey net in place for their members in the form of insurance. When someone gets hurt on a call, you can wait MONTHS for Worker's Comp to make a decision on a claim.

When your department has a policy that pays your the SAME WEEK when you are hurt, is a place where people want to work, knowing someone has their back.

Municipalities-

Clean Heavy-Duty Vehicle Grants available

Up to $4.9 million in grant funding is available through the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy Clean Heavy-Duty Vehicle Program to replace diesel-powered garbage and recycling trucks with zero-emission battery electric vehicles. Grants require a 50% match and may be used for vehicle purchase, charging infrastructure, and workforce development and training. Grant applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until available funds are expended.
