Old man winter has arrived here in Michigan. We're expecting a potent winter storm today into tomorrow. This storm will bring much of the state heavy snow and strong gusty winds! This can of course bring power outages as well as very difficult travel. If you can avoid travel during times of heavy snow and winds, that would be advisable!

If you have an extended outage:

- Dress warmly: Layer up with clothes, socks, and hats to stay warm. Cozy blankets are your new best friends, winter jackets as well!
- Close curtains and blinds: This helps trap heat in your home.
- Unplug appliances: This prevents damage from power surges when the electricity returns. But don't forget to plug them back in!
- Use flashlights instead of candles: Candles can be fire hazards, especially with curious pets or children around.
- Minimize fridge and freezer access: Opening them allows the cold air to escape, spoiling food faster. In a pinch, refrigerated items can go outside in the snow if you live in a location it's safe to do so!
- Check on vulnerable neighbors: Especially the elderly or those with young children, who may need assistance staying warm.
- Have portable phone chargers: Emergency battery packs for your phone can help extend your battery life the extra day you may need during a long outage.
- Check your sump pump and keep an eye out for water back-ups. If you can move items off of the floor ahead of time, you may save yourself from some of the troubles later.

Ever been stuck in your vehicle in the winter? If not, you're lucky! Many times, when conditions are poor, it can take roadside towing services a considerable amount of time to get to slide-offs and non-serious accidents out on the road.

Having an emergency kit in your vehicle can make all of the difference in a bad situation.

Be sure to get one if you don't already have one!

With insurance costs rising across the board, some of you may be wondering what you can do to get the best insurance quotes!

There's a few things you can do to make sure your quoting experience goes smoothly. These things also help your agent get you the best and most accurate pricing.

Sometimes, you'll need to provide some of these things just to get a quote at all!

Be sure to have:

- Your current declarations sheets: These help your agents review your current coverage and provide proof of prior to receive new quotes.

- Home, driver, and vehicle information: Agents will need to know basic home construction information such as the age of your home, square footage, finish-qualities and more. For auto quotes, agents will want to know who is residing in the home, who is driving, and what vehicles are in the home.

- Vehicle titles or registrations: Sometimes, agents will need to provide proof of ownership to get an auto insurance quote.

- Home inspections or appraisals: Some insurance carriers require updated inspection or appraisal documents in order to provide an accurate quote.

- Receipts for maintenance items and home updates: Install a new roof? Be sure to keep that receipt and have it ready for your agent. Many carriers will provide better rates or discounts for home upgrades and newer roofs.

- Don't forget to ask questions: If you have a specific concern or coverage question, be sure to ask your agent about it while they put together your quotes. Many times, coverages can vary between carriers, so it's important your agent knows what you're trying to protect against.

Tis the season for fall maintenance around the home! Whether you own or rent, there are things you will want to consider doing around your home to keep it in tip-top condition.

From checking your gutters for obstructions and your home exterior for damage, to making sure your furnaces are running properly. Of course, you can't forget about fire alarms and CO2 alarms either!

While not an all-inclusive list, these are some of the most important things you can do around your home to help make winter time a little smoother for you.
