This week we are at _inkwell_books_ for our Small Business Spotlight!

We met with Karrah, one of the owners of this sweet independent bookstore in downtown Rockton. They offer both new and used books, as well as clothing, gifts and more!

What stands out about Inkwell?

- Karrah worked at the store for a year prior to buying it with the co-owner Andrea last summer.

- They stock a variety of titles and genres. Karrah said they try to have a little bit of everything.

- What does Karrah love most about being an independent bookstore in her community? She said being a safe space where people know they are welcome and can be themselves. They try to have representation for everyone including kids, moms, and the LGBTQ+ community.

- They give space for local authors, artists and poets to share their talents.

- Not only do they offer new and used books, but they also have clothes, goods made by local vendors, and
3-D printed items.

- In addition to the monthly book club, they also offer crafty workshops like bookbinding.

Fun fact: Karrah's favorite author is Robin Hobb!

Jake said he loves the custom 3-D printed dragons!

This week we are featuring La Croûte Bakery Cafe for our Small Business Spotlight!

Anna and her team craft traditional French and Italian breads, pastries, cookies, lattes and so much more.

What's special about La Croûte?

- Anna graduated from the Culinary Institute of America with a Bachelor's degree in Food Business Management with a focus on Advanced Pastry.

- They are known for their Bacon Cheddar Chive Scone and Chocolate Croissant, but she switches up the menu on a daily/weekly/monthly basis. Look out for the Lemon White Chocolate scones coming in April!

- She comes from a family of restauranteurs. Her parents own 2 restaurants, as does her brother.

- Anna tries to source as much of her ingredients as possible from regional suppliers, like Prairie Farms & Andes Mints.

- Her favorite item on the menu to bake? Sourdough bread because of the science behind it.

- Anna said she loves being involved in the local community. They donate their leftovers to the fire department and local food pantries. They also donate to local causes, and Anna is a mentor for the incubator program at Hononegah High School.

- Anna said her staff and seeing how much they love what they do keeps her motivated and inspired.

Fun fact: The logo for La Croûte is actually Anna's handwriting!

Jake's favorite was the Bacon Cheddar Chive scone. He said it was fluffy and buttery perfection!

Our series is growing into a deeper and more personal Small Business Spotlight, and this time we stopped by Kelce & Company!

They specialize in fire and water restoration, carpet cleaning, as well as commercial cleaning and concrete coating services. They are a locally owned, 3rd generation family-owned business who have been serving the Rockford area for over 45 years!

Jake got to spend some time with the owner Lisa and their assistant sales manager Verneda, and learned all about their rich history, and their dedication to providing the best possible service and results.

What's different about Kelce & Company?

- The company was founded in 1980 by Lisa's mom Gail, with her dad Dennis joining the company a few years later.

- They were originally a Servicemaster franchisee, and went independent in 1991, becoming Kelce & Company

- Often times, customers get to deal directly with the owner Lisa.

- They focus heavily on continuing education and training of their staff and technicians. They are certified through the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification (IICRC), who set the global standard for the cleaning and restoration industry.

- They said there isn't a single business or private residence that they can't help in one way or another.

Lisa said their core mission is for their customers to feel like someone is there to help during some of their worst times, and that they are working with people who are honest and trustworthy.

Fun fact: Kelce & Company is one of the only local companies who offer commercial kitchen exhaust cleaning services!

Jake's favorite part? Watching their technician/magician Brett clean that area rug. He said it was mesmerizing!
