Employee Turnover & Workers’ Comp Costs

High employee turnover doesn’t just create hiring headaches—it can also drive up your workers’ compensation costs.

New and inexperienced employees are often more likely to get hurt. When turnover is high, businesses can end up with more claims, more training gaps, and less experienced people doing the work.

That can eventually affect your Experience Mod Factor and what you pay for workers’ comp.

A few ways to reduce the risk:

Build safety training into every new hire’s first days

Pair new employees with experienced workers

Document training and safety procedures

Look for patterns behind injuries involving newer employees

Reducing turnover is important. But when turnover happens, having a strong onboarding and safety process can keep it from becoming a workers’ comp problem.

At Hanlon Insurance Agency, LLC, our executive officers hold the CPCU and CIC designations. We help New Jersey businesses manage workers’ comp costs, claims, Experience Mod Factors, and coverage gaps.

Heat-Related Workers’ Comp Claims: Preventable and Expensive

High temperatures can do more than slow down a crew. Heat exhaustion, dehydration, and heat stroke can quickly become serious workers’ compensation claims.

For New Jersey employers with outdoor crews, warehouse employees, roofers, contractors, and manufacturing operations, prevention should be part of the daily safety plan.

Provide easy access to water
Schedule regular cool-down breaks
Train supervisors to recognize heat illness symptoms
Adjust workloads during extreme heat
Acclimate new and returning employees gradually

A preventable heat-related claim can mean medical costs, lost productivity, increased claim frequency, and potential pressure on your Experience Modification Factor.

At Hanlon Insurance Agency, LLC, our executive officers hold the CPCU and CIC designations, providing experienced guidance in workers’ compensation, loss control, and risk management.

Mid-Year Payroll Changes: Why Your Mod Is at Risk

Hiring more employees? Adding overtime? Moving employees into new job duties? Expanding into a new line of work?

Mid-year payroll changes can have a bigger impact on your Workers’ Compensation program than many business owners realize.

Your Experience Modification Factor is driven by historical payroll, classifications, and claims experience. Significant payroll changes today may not immediately change your Mod, but they can create problems at audit and affect future Mod calculations if they are not managed correctly.

Common trouble spots include:

• Payroll growing faster than originally estimated
• Employees performing work under the wrong classification
• New operations creating higher-rated exposures
• Subcontractor costs not properly documented
• Payroll estimates not being updated with the carrier

The worst time to discover a payroll problem is at the year-end audit—when the additional premium is already due.

At Hanlon Insurance Agency, LLC, we help businesses actively manage Workers’ Compensation throughout the policy year—not just at renewal. Our executive officers hold the CPCU and CIC designations, providing experienced guidance in Workers’ Comp Mod Factor management, classification review, coverage analysis, and risk management.

If your payroll has changed significantly this year, now is a good time for a mid-year Workers’ Comp review.

A Policy of Mutual Trust and Respect.

Many business owners assume their commercial auto policy covers every vehicle used for company business.

It often doesn't.

If employees use their personal vehicles to run errands, visit customers, make deliveries, or travel between job sites, your business could be exposed to a costly lawsuit if an accident occurs. That's where Hired & Non-Owned Auto Liability (HNOA) coverage becomes critical.

Here's the difference:

• Hired Auto: Covers vehicles your business rents, leases, or borrows for business purposes.
• Non-Owned Auto: Protects your business when employees use their own vehicles on company business.

Without this coverage, your business may have to defend itself and pay damages out of pocket—even if the employee has personal auto insurance.

One accident can quickly become a six or seven-figure claim.

At Hanlon Insurance Agency, LLC, we help New Jersey businesses identify hidden coverage gaps before they become expensive claims. Our executive officers hold both the CPCU and CIC professional designations, providing experienced guidance in commercial insurance, risk management, and coverage analysis.

Don't assume you're covered—know you're covered.

Flood insurance is one of those coverages most business owners and homeowners don't think about—until it's too late.

One of the biggest misconceptions we hear is:
"I'm not in a flood zone, so I don't need flood insurance."

The reality is that flooding can happen almost anywhere. Heavy rain, overwhelmed storm drains, rapid snowmelt, hurricanes, and even nearby construction can cause water damage that standard property insurance typically does not cover.

In fact, many flood insurance claims come from properties located outside of high-risk flood zones.

Before the next major storm hits New Jersey, take a few minutes to understand your actual flood exposure—not just what the map says.

At Hanlon Insurance Agency, LLC, our executive officers hold the CPCU and CIC designations, providing experienced guidance to help businesses and families identify coverage gaps before they become costly claims.

Business Interruption Coverage: The Coverage You Find Out About Too Late

A fire, burst pipe, or severe storm can damage your building—but the property damage is often only part of the financial hit.

What happens if your business can't open for weeks or months?

Without Business Interruption Coverage, you could still be responsible for:

• Payroll
• Rent or mortgage payments
• Loan payments
• Utilities
• Taxes
• Lost income while your doors are closed

Many business owners assume their property policy automatically replaces lost revenue. In reality, that protection typically depends on having the right Business Income and Extra Expense coverage in place—and having the limits and waiting periods properly reviewed.

The goal isn't just to rebuild your building. It's to keep your business alive while you rebuild.

At Hanlon Insurance Agency, LLC, our executive officers hold the CPCU and CIC designations, providing experienced guidance to help business owners identify coverage gaps before a claim occurs—not after.

Storm Damage Claims: What Business Owners Get Wrong

One summer storm can shut down your business—but the biggest financial hit often isn't the wind or hail. It's finding out after the storm that your insurance doesn't cover what you thought it did.

Here are a few common mistakes we see:

• Assuming your building is insured for today's rebuilding costs.
• Not understanding whether coverage is based on Replacement Cost or Actual Cash Value.
• Forgetting about business interruption coverage while operations are down.
• Waiting until after the damage occurs to document equipment, inventory, and property.
• Ignoring roof age, maintenance, and policy exclusions that can affect claim payments.

The best time to review your coverage is before severe weather is in the forecast—not while filing a claim.

At Hanlon Insurance Agency, LLC, we help New Jersey business owners identify coverage gaps before they become expensive surprises. Our executive officers hold the CPCU and CIC designations, providing the experience and technical expertise needed to help protect your business from the unexpected.

Tools & Equipment Coverage: Replacement Cost vs. Actual Cash Value

Your skid steer is stolen. Your compressor catches fire. A trailer full of tools disappears overnight.

The question isn't whether your insurance covers it.
The question is how much you'll actually receive.

Replacement Cost (RC)
Pays what it costs to replace the equipment with new, comparable equipment (subject to your policy terms and limits).
Helps you get back to work faster.
Usually comes with a higher premium.

Actual Cash Value (ACV)
Pays the current depreciated value of the equipment.
Age, wear, and condition reduce the claim payment.
Lower premium—but often a much larger out-of-pocket expense after a loss.

Example:
A compressor purchased for $10,000 five years ago now costs $13,000 to replace.

Replacement Cost: Claim could pay approximately $13,000 (less deductible and subject to policy terms).
Actual Cash Value: Claim may pay only $5,500–$7,000, depending on depreciation.

That difference comes directly out of your pocket.

For contractors, landscapers, plumbers, electricians, and other businesses that rely on specialized equipment, choosing the wrong valuation method can delay projects and strain cash flow after a claim.

Don't assume your policy provides replacement cost. Many business owners are surprised to learn it doesn't.

At Hanlon Insurance Agency, LLC, we help business owners understand exactly how their tools and equipment are covered—before a loss occurs.

Independent Contractor vs. Employee: New Jersey Doesn't Care What You Call Them

Think calling someone a 1099 contractor keeps you compliant?

New Jersey says: Not so fast.

Beginning October 1, 2026, the NJ Department of Labor's new regulations strengthen enforcement of the state's already strict ABC Test for worker classification.

Here's the reality:

A signed independent contractor agreement isn't enough.
Issuing a 1099 isn't enough.
Requiring the worker to carry their own insurance isn't enough.
Having them form an LLC isn't enough.

To legally classify someone as an independent contractor, your business must satisfy all three parts of New Jersey's ABC Test.

Some common situations that create problems:

• Contractors performing the same work your company sells to customers
• Setting work hours or controlling how the job is performed
• Workers who depend primarily on your company for income

Getting it wrong can lead to:

Retroactive payroll taxes
Unpaid overtime and wage claims
Workers' compensation exposure
Stop-work orders
Significant state penalties and audits

If your business relies on 1099 workers, now is the time to review those relationships—before the new regulations take effect.

At Hanlon Insurance Agency, LLC, our Executive Officers hold the CPCU and CIC designations—a level of expertise held by fewer than 1% of licensed insurance agents nationwide. We help businesses identify risk before it becomes an expensive claim or regulatory problem.

Ladder Safety Isn’t Optional—It’s a Claim Multiplier

One missed step can turn into a serious injury, a workers’ comp claim, lost productivity, OSHA concerns, and a higher Experience Mod Factor.

For contractors, roofers, maintenance crews, and any business with employees working at heights, ladder safety needs to be treated as part of the job—not an afterthought.

A few basics that matter:

Use the right ladder for the job
Inspect ladders before use
Keep three points of contact
Secure ladders properly
Train employees before the claim happens

The cheapest claim is still the one that never happens.

At Hanlon Insurance Agency, LLC, our executive officers hold the CPCU and CIC designations, giving our clients experienced guidance in coverage review, workers’ compensation, risk management, and claims prevention.
