Hi! I’m your Ag in the Classroom educator for Lyon County. I’m so excited for the school year to start and all the agricultural topics I get to chatter about with the kids. We have a great time!!

🌱 Educator Spotlight: Kara Jensen 🌱

This week, we’re shining the spotlight on Kara Jensen of Alton, one of our incredible educators at Siouxland Agriculture in the Classroom! 💚

Kara joined our team in Fall 2024 and reaches an incredible amount of students each month across Sioux, Lyon, O’Brien and Plymouth counties.

Agriculture has always been close to Kara’s heart. She grew up on an acreage outside of Hawarden where her family raised dairy goats. Through 4-H, Kara completed projects with meat goats, bottle and bucket calves, and swine. She has also shown her herd of Toggenburg dairy goats at the county, state and national levels since 2000! 🐐

Kara graduated from West Sioux High School and continued her education at South Dakota State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in Dietetics. After college, life took her to Iowa City, where she worked as an optician for four years before welcoming her daughter in 2022.

Since then, Kara and her daughter have made their way back home, bringing her right back to the agricultural industry she has always loved. ❤️🌾

Kara joined Lyon County Farm Bureau in 2024, where she currently serves as the Outreach Coordinator while also sharing her passion for agriculture as an educator with Siouxland Ag in the Classroom.

We are so thankful to have Kara on our team and for the passion she brings into classrooms across Northwest Iowa! She is helping students understand agriculture, where their food comes from, and the many opportunities within the agricultural industry.

Help us give Kara a big thank you for helping grow the next generation of agricultural leaders! 🌽🐄🌱

As one of the SAITC educators, I am so excited to have our very own Lyon County Farm Bureau board member join the Siouxland Agriculture in the Classroom board! The 2025-2026 school year was the first full year of SAITC programming in Lyon County schools.

I taught monthly ag lessons for West Lyon 4th grade, George-Little Rock 2nd grade, and Central Lyon 2nd and 4th grades! We had a blast all school year and I’m looking forward to working with all of the fantastic teachers I worked with next year.

🌽 SAITC programming runs from September-April each school year. We are primarily targeted towards the 2nd and 4th grade age ranges. During the summer months (and school year by request) we are available for library and other outreach programs for elementary students 🌞 reach out today if you’d like to partner with us at an event! My most recent outreach events were Dordt Ag Days and the Sioux Center Summer Celebration.

Congrats, Dwayne!

We are extra excited to announce a new face to our board this year from Lyon County!

Help us welcome Dwayne Postma!

🌾 Board Member Spotlight: Dwayne Postma

Today’s Board Member Spotlight features Dwayne Postma, a lifelong advocate for agriculture, education, and community leadership.

Dwayne grew up in Doon and now lives in Rock Rapids, proudly representing Lyon County Farm Bureau. After 32 years as the HS Agriculture teacher at Central Lyon, he continues to invest in the next generation by backgrounding feeder cattle and working alongside his stepson on their family cattle operation—raising corn, managing a 2,500‑head custom feedlot, and caring for a 110‑head cow herd.

A graduate of South Dakota State University with a Bachelor of Science in Ag Education, Dwayne is passionate about agriculture, youth opportunities, and helping students understand where their safe, plentiful, and affordable food comes from.

Outside of agriculture, Dwayne is deeply involved in community service, church activities, and leadership roles across several boards. He also treasures time with his wife Sharon, his three stepchildren and their spouses, and his two granddaughters. His Thursday morning coffee crew—“The Think Tank”—is a highlight of every week.

A lifelong football fan and coach, Dwayne has been part of 4 state championships, 7 runner‑up teams, and 31 playoff appearances with Central Lyon/George/Little Rock.

His favorite quote comes from Vince Lombardi:
“In our pursuit of perfection we shall attain excellence!”

We’re grateful for Dwayne’s leadership, passion for agriculture, and commitment to our organization!

Happy June Dairy Month! 🥛🐐

While cows may get most of the spotlight, we’re here to celebrate “the other” dairy animal — goats!

Dairy goats provide delicious milk, support farms and families, and bring a whole lot of personality to the dairy industry. This month, we’re raising a glass to the hardworking does, dedicated breeders, and everyone who knows that great dairy comes in more than one size.

We've been keeping busy across Lyon County! While the three schools -- George-Little Rock, West Lyon, and Central Lyon -- have been doing Siouxland Ag in the Classroom lessons at a slightly different pace than many of the SAITC schools, they have all finally finished the STEM challenge of building pig barns! This lesson is a blast for the 2nd and 4th graders🐖
